Academic Language Skills Support

If you are new to studying at a UK university, Northumbria University provides taught support to help you settle in, understand academic expectations at a UK university, and develop the academic and communication skills required to reach your potential.

This support is in the form of an additional module called Academic Language Skills, which will be taught alongside your degree programme. The module is designed to help you develop the academic and communication skills required to reach your potential at your level of study in the UK. Among the skills that the module will help to develop are:

  • Understanding assignment briefs and exam questions in your subject area
  • Engaging critically with academic materials and tasks
  • Developing research and ‘critical writing’ skills
  • Planning, structuring and referencing for assignments, reports, literature reviews and dissertations
  • Designing and delivering effective academic presentations
  • Writing reflectively
  • Discussing and refining your academic work at Northumbria

If you an International Student, this module should automatically appear on your timetable and module list shortly after you enrol onto your degree programme.

To read more about the support and contact us with any questions you have, or if the module does not appear on your list, please log in to your Student Portal and search for 'Academic Language Skills Support' in the Help and Support section. If you are unable to access your Student Portal at this time, you can use this contact form to get in touch with our Ask4Help team.
