MSc Computing and Information Technology

Msc Computing And Information Technology Student Kristina DambrauskaiteWhat undergraduate course did you study and where?

MPharm Pharmacy, Kaunas University of Medicine, Lithuania

Why did you decide to study a Masters?

I want to change my profession.

Why did you choose Northumbria University? Why did you choose your specific course?

I started as a part-time distance learner and at the time it was the only course suitable for me. I chose Northumbria because it's in Newcastle where I was working.

What makes your course challenging/inspiring/different?  How would you sum up the difference between undergraduate and postgraduate study?

As postgraduates we have more challenges. Knowing the information from the lectures is not enough, we need to read other sources and do our own research.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

It actually depends on the module. Some of them have lectures and seminars. Seminars are very useful as you can practically apply the knowledge you received in the lecture and ask whatever questions you have from the last lecture. Other modules may have workshop-type lectures, where you get the theory and work on it in the same lecture. Sometimes we work in groups and other times individually, depending on what the lecturer wants. The same applies to the assignments - some of them are done in groups and others are individual.

What impressed you most about our academic staff?

I was impressed by the respect they show to students. The way we communicate makes me feel more like a colleague rather than student.

As a postgraduate student, what aspects of university life are important to you?

Location most of the time. I have a baby who needs me a lot, so it is very important to me that the journey to university was as short as possible. I ride a bike so the parking facilities are important to me as well. As a postgraduate student I need to read a lot and search for information, so I really appreciate the library that is open 24/7 and the free NORA search service.

What doors do you think this course will open for you?

I am changing my career so I think it will open the door to a completely new world.

Have you changed as a person?

I have improved my tolerance and compassion skills, and I am more open minded.

How would you describe Northumbria in three words?

Young, active, innovative.

Do you feel that your course has been a worthwhile investment in your future?

Yes.
