Graduate Diploma Law / Common Professional Examination

Where are you from?

Northumberland

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

I chose northumbria because of its excellent reputation in law, and because of its convenient location.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

I love Newcastle! The city centre is buzzing and the nightlife is great, but theres also loads of things to do during the day. Theres a varied range of cheap and cheerful cafes, delicious restaurants, independent shops and local markets... plus there are always loads of events on - pop-up shops, vintage fairs, food festivals, art exhibitions - so I'm never bored!

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

I grew up in and around Newcastle, so not much surprises me now! Although after visiting friends in London, it's definitely a lot cheaper to live in!

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

Northumbria was very welcoming. All the staff have been really friendly and helpful from the beginning.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

I enjoy learning here- the atmosphere is really conducive to learning, the facilities are great and lecturers and students alike seem really enthusiastic about their subjects.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

I'd say the GDL lecturers and seminar leaders.

What is your favourite place on campus?

Either the 3rd floor of the library (it's so quiet) or the social hubs in the Law School.

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?

No clubs or sports teams this year, as I haven't had much free time to be able to commit, but I did have a go at mooting. It was a challenging experience but I found it rewarding.

What is the best thing about your course?

It covers a broad range of topics and moves at a pretty fast pace, so that makes it interesting.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Start things early, well before deadlines approach! Take opportunities that arise. And get lots of sleep.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I aspire to be a solicitor. I think I have improved my ability to focus and motivate myself, as well as my analytical skills.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

It's a great university and offers so many opportunities for both professional and personal development.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I have become more self-reliant, definitely more confident and I am increasingly aware of the hard work that is required to succeed in law!

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Challenging, worth it.

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

Yes!
