International Business Management

International Business Management Student Ruth KennedyWhere are you from?

Wolverhampton

Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

A good city and great atmosphere on campus.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

It's very cultural and easy to find something new or exciting to do.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

I was impressed at how friendly the locals are, everyone in shops are all nice and welcoming. It makes a nice change from the surly attitudes you get elsewhere.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

Yes, they put on plenty of Welcome Events for you to make friends and join new societies.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

Making new friends who I know I will be friends with for a long time in the future.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

All of the admin staff I have encountered have always been very helpful.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

I met a third year student on the applicant visit day who was very enthusiastic about his degree and the possibilities it held for him.

What is your favourite place on campus?

The Students' Union - particularly on a Thursday night for karaoke.

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?

I wanted to join the musical theatre society but due to an unforeseen illness I never got the chance.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

I have had to learn to adapt to live with strangers, this is challenging at times but you soon get used to it.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Be open to trying new things and don't be afraid to be yourself, there will always be someone as crazy as you!  Just remember everyone is in the same boat and is new to the University way, it takes time to adjust, particularly living away from home. Freshers Week keeps your mind off home but the next two weeks or so after reality and homesickness kicks in but if you can get through it, it will be well worth your while.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I have definitely had to get over some of my fears, meeting new people was never a strong point for me but after a while i got used to it and it become enjoyable meeting new friends.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Challenging, rewarding, refreshing!

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?

100% yes!
