MSc Microbiology

HLS_Sophie -Kingham _Student _Microbiology MScWhy did you choose the course?

I love studying all those things that affect the word around us but no one can actually see in front of them.

What appealed to you about Northumbria and studying in Newcastle?

Northumbria was one of the very few universities that did the exact programme that I wanted, plus I had heard about how new and up-to- date the facilities were.

Favourite thing about Newcastle?

Its definitely hard to beat the cheap nightlife.

What did you like most about the course?

How passionate the lecturers were about their subject. Definitely great motivation for selflearning.

What are you doing now?

Still looking out for jobs in my field of study. My programme only encouraged me to want to work in it even more.

How did your undergraduate degree prepare you for your current post?

It got me used to the degree of work and studying expected of me for a Masters. It prepared me for a more independent style of learning, which at the start is a bit daunting but then becomes far more exciting than undergraduate study.

Do you have any advice for anyone applying for the course?

Make sure it is something you definitely want. I had to take a year out after my undergraduate degree to get a job so I could afford all my bills, because as a postgraduate it’s rare to get any funding. Spending your hard earned money instead of getting a loan is certainly motivation to do well because you only have one chance at it!
