Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Pharmaceutical-Chemistry_Student_Stacey-KeillorWhat appealed to you about Northumbria University / studying in Newcastle?

Northumbria was very helpful, especially as I was a mature student with no experience of university.

What was it about the course / subject area that particularly appealed?

I have an interest in chemistry, and liked the idea of knowing how drugs work on the body and how they are developed.

What qualifications did you have?

I applied via UCAS but I only had GCSEs and had started a degree through the open university.

What do you like most about the course?

I enjoy the lab sessions.

Do you have the opportunity for any work placements during your course?

Yes after this year I can apply for an industrial placement for a year (eg Proctor & Gamble).  I am just about to start applying to companies now ready for next year.

What do you do when you're not studying?

I enjoy dog training - I take part in agility training and competitions with my two dogs.  I work part time in a supermarket but am looking for a new job with better hours.  I am a course rep.  Finally, I enjoy shopping!!!

What's your accommodation like?

I own my own home (or at least the bank does!!).

What would you like to do when you graduate?

No idea, I have just started looking into career prospects - the Careers Centre is helping to point me in the right direction.  So far, looking more into research and development.

Have you used Student Services during your course?

I have been on to the Careers Centre to start looking into possible jobs.

Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course, or for university in general?

From a mature student point of view the big thing is financial - make sure you know how much you are entitled to and that you can budget around it.  Avoid the need for a part time job if possible as time will become very precious.
