Mentor Information

Preparation of Mentors in Practice

Northumbria University runs a number of courses throughout the year which allow registered healthcare practitioners to become student mentors with the option of gaining academic credit for the work undertaken. The modules are offered as a non-accredited option (available from February 2018) or at academic Level 5 (Diploma), Level 6 (Degree) and Level 7 (Post-graduate), although participants will engage in shared learning in the classroom.

Please note that, whilst the non-accredited modules are free, there is a fee of £150 should you wish to gain academic credit.

For further information and details on how to apply for the courses, please consult this document or visit this page.

Mentor Updates

The NMC requires that nursing and midwifery mentors complete an annual update to be able to continue to assess students during their placements; ODP mentors are also required to undertake updates. These updates can be completed in one of two ways:

  • Face-to-face - In addition to a mentor's first update, mentors must ensure that they attend a face-to-face update every year to ensure that their mentor status remains active. Sessions are typically delivered by the Practice Placement Facilitators within a mentor's trust - click below to find when the next update is and how you can book onto it.
  • Online - The online mentor update is no longer available - please refer to the information in the face-to-face update section or alternatively contact your Practice Placement Facilitator for further information.

Face-to-face updates can be booked though the Practice Placement Facilitator for a mentor's employing Trust; PPF contact details can be found on this page. Please follow the relevant link below to be taken to the information you require:

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust

Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (awaiting information, please contact your Trust PPF)

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust

The sexual health pathway delivered to qualified staff within the CPD framework includes assessment of integrated sexual health competencies by mentors with specific sexual health knowledge and skills. Pre-registration students may also be allocated to sexual health settings as part of their spoke placements. As such, all sexual health mentors are required to be registered on the Arc PEP system and undergo annual updating delivered by the PPF within their employing trust.

Sexual health mentors should arrange their mentor update within their own trust area as directed above.

In addition, the programme-lead for sexual health will deliver CPD-specific curriculum updates to mentors within each sexual health service on an annual basis.

Please contact the Sexual Health Pathway Leader for CPD framework for further information.
