Tanvi Raj

Meet Tanvi Raj, a Law with International Business LLB (Hons) student who completed her placement at IBM

What skills have you learnt on your placement?

Working with senior level management both internally and with clients such as Barclays Bank, I got a high level view of the business. Contributing to several projects and initiatives for the client, I also improved crucial transferable skills such as collaboration, presentation, organisation, work ethic, proactivity and efficiency.

Did you have the opportunity to work with real clients on live projects?

As I worked in IBM’s client team for Barclays Bank, I worked directly with Barclays on several projects. I led IBM’s engagement on a Barclay’s education platform and also expanded IBM’s relationship with Barclay’s young professionals. I also had the amazing opportunity to contribute to the marketing content for the Barclays Rise Hackathon which is the biggest globally held hackathon in financial services.

What personal achievements have you experienced whilst on your placement?

The level of responsibility my team entrusted me with was the biggest personal achievement for me. I worked with the Managing Director of the client team on several of his reviews with the IBM UK General Manager and Barclays C-Suite Executives. I also provided marketing support to an internal global initiative, working with teams based in the US and Canada; this improved my understanding of how IBM teams from different geographical and cultural backgrounds work together to achieve mutual objectives.

What did you enjoy the most about your placement?

Undoubtedly, my team! Each and every member of my team was always happy and willing to help; especially my manager who became my personal mentor throughout the year, providing me with challenging responsibilities and pushing me out of my comfort zone.

As a result of completing a placement, how do you feel you can make an impact in your final year and after graduation?

I believe that I now have a better understanding of the business world and business processes which I can apply into my business modules this year. Whichever organisation I end up working for whether it be in the UK or Canada (Where I will be moving), I am confident that the knowledge and skills I have obtained this past year will stand me in excellent stead to make positive contributions to the business.
