Leadership and Human Resource Management

The Leadership and Human Resource Management (LHRM) department encompasses our business management, leadership, human resource management and apprenticeship programmes.

Our programmes are underpinned by world-leading research and are professionally recognised by the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development (CIPD), Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and other professional bodies.

As a department we research a wide range of areas, including Public Policy and Public Management, Leadership and Organisational Change, Sustainability and Business Ethics.

Overview of Department

Within the Leadership and Human Resource Management (LHRM) department we offer a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees specialising in business management, leadership, and human resource management. We also oversee a large portfolio of degree and higher apprenticeships as well as distance learning programmes.

The LHRM department consists of nearly 80 academic staff who currently teach over 1800 students. Our programmes are professionally recognised by the Chartered Institute for Personnel Development (CIPD), Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and other professional bodies and are underpinned by research, including in areas such as Public Policy and Public Management, Sustainability and CSR, Leadership and Organisational Change. Our research is organised around three core research interest areas: public policy and management, building better business, and creating sustainable work futures.

Our research contributes to the regional development agenda through developments in public management, leadership and ’localism’ in the public sector, public participation and policy and sustainable regional development. The focus of our research is practical and applied and aims to add value to our organisational partners. Our client-centred approach enables us to solve real organisational problems with the aim to improve organisational effectiveness.

Study

We have a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees specialising in leadership, human resource management and public management. We provide degrees both at our Newcastle campus and in Amsterdam, London and through transnational educational partners across the world.

Undergraduate degrees

Our Business and Management Foundation Year provides students with an introduction to both the theoretical and practical dimensions of business and management. The programme blends theory and practice to develop an understanding of management practice and is aligned to the principles of responsible management and sustainability goals.

Offering a variety of options, our BA (Hons) Business Management degree is the most flexible of Newcastle Business School’s programmes. It equips students with the skills, qualities and capabilities valued by employers across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors and that underpin successful enterprise. It provides the freedom to explore and experiment in a range of different business areas. Broader management modules include marketing, finance strategy, organisational behaviour, and HR with the opportunity to choose specialist modules to tailor the degree toward students’ interests and intended careers.

Our BA (Hons) Business and Human Resource Management degree is designed to develop students’ capabilities to work at a strategic level around attracting, developing, and engaging the right people. Its key focus is on leading and managing organisations’ human resources ethically, responsibly, and sustainably. Students study key concepts such as strategic resourcing, human resource development, employee relations, performance and reward, and employment law. At the same time they develop broader knowledge and understanding of the global business context.

Master’s degrees

Our MSc in Business and Management is focussed on developing global management competencies, leadership and management and leadership skills for responsible change. Our MSc in Business with Human Resource Management aims to develop students’ broad business skills alongside a specialist pathway in Human Resource Management. Specialist modules cover principles, values, and approaches in HRM, as well as organisational behaviour and practice. During both programmes students get the opportunity to develop research skills through a master’s dissertation or an investigative consultancy project that’s related to a particular HRM or business issue.

Apprenticeship programmes

We provide a range of degree and higher apprenticeships at both level 6 and level 7. Our BA (Hons) Business Leadership and Management Practice Degree Apprenticeship leads to a Chartered Manager qualification and includes a CMI level 5 diploma. Our innovative Level 7 Senior Leader Higher Apprenticeship leads to Chartered Manager status, a Post Graduate Diploma in Senior Leadership, and offers access to our MBA top-up programme. Our Level 7 Senior People Professional Higher Apprenticeship awards both CIPD Chartership and a Post Graduate Diploma offering access to a top-up MA in Human Resource Management and Development.

Doctoral degrees

LHRM is a research active department, and thus an ideal place to undertake doctoral study. We offered both PhD and DBA programmes, supported by research training and strong supervisory teams.

Research

Our research is organised around three core research interest areas: public policy and management, building better business, and creating sustainable work futures. The 2021 REF results placed our research power at 9th in the rankings for Business and Management Studies. The department of LHRM has made several notable contributions to business and management studies in each of these areas.

In the area of public policy and management, we have had recent success with Research England on the support for a new Policy and Evidence Hub, in conjunction with department of Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Strategy, and have formed the academic building blocks of Human Learning Systems, a complexity-informed approach to public management.

In management studies more broadly, our Responsible Business Seminar series, Sustainable Working Futures, and the launch of our Baltic Sessions has attracted internationally recognised speakers. Supporting sustainable and responsible business growth is central to our work in organisational studies, human resource development and learning, and critical management studies.

Knowledge Exchange

Our knowledge exchange (KE) portfolio is continuing to proliferate as we develop strong partnerships to deliver a force for good. We have a strong record of collaborative and contract research, CPD, consultancy and KTPs across the public, private and third sectors. Among our most significant initiatives is our pioneering work with Mersey Care on developing restorative just cultures (over 1,200 people from 25 NHS Trusts have completed this programme so far), our leadership and career development work with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), and our leading role in the delivery of the Help to Grow Management programme, supporting small and medium sized businesses to boost their business performance, resilience and growth.

Leadership and Human Resource Management will continue to build upon the school’s knowledge exchange that creates collaborative links at local, national and international levels, and see KE as our core route to impact. Our students are encouraged to engage with businesses across all areas through their work placements, study abroad opportunities, research and consultancy projects. Students have the opportunity to work with the Business Clinic and help a wide range of businesses in their development.

International

Our orientation is international in everything we do. Our programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels have a truly global focus. Similarly, our research often examines issues in an international or comparative context.  Our student body is made up of people from all over the world as well as from the UK, which allows us to provide a local to global and global to local experience for all stakeholders.  Our senior researchers have international profiles, holding Visiting Professor roles in a range of countries.
