BiographySingh Yuvir Sharma Bandhu

As cliché as it sounds, it was always a personal dream for me (clearly evidenced by my picture ha!). It's a challenging profession but if you are fully dedicated in your work, you are already on the right track. After my A Levels, I studied for my LLB (Hons) distance learning from Northumbria University in 2015. I was working at the same time. In my ultimate year, I did a few mini-pupillages and enrolled for the LLM BPTC with Northumbria University and I got accepted in 2019. During the course, we faced a lot of uncertainties because of the pandemic, our centralised exams got postponed. At the end of the day, everything turned out alright, I was able to sit for the exams remotely and made it. Today I am serving my pupillage in Mauritius.

What are you doing now?

I am currently a pupil barrister at the Attorney General's Office then I will complete my pupillage under the supervision of a Senior Counsel in private practice. I will then be admitted to the Mauritian Bar in September 2022 upon the successful completion of 12 months pupillage.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

Since I was already studying for my LLB (Hons) Distance Learning, Northumbria University was always my preferred university to complete the BPTC and I am delighted that I was accepted. On top of that, I also had friends that studied the BPTC at Northumbria University, they shared their positive experience with me.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

Indeed, the mix of lectures, seminars and small group sessions were of great help. My tutors' feedback were always helpful and made me become a more improved version in terms of my advocacy.

How connected was your course with industry?

The Course was very well connected, we did have guest lectures as well and close link with local barristers' chambers.

If you took on a placement during your course how did you feel this helped you in your career/ with your studies?

Not really a placement, but I was selected to attend the residential advocacy weekend at Cumberland Lodge where there was a lot of advocacy exercises and even an advocacy masterclass. Since I lived close to Newcastle Crown Court, I did visit the court a few times to attend a few cases as well.

What was the best thing about your course?

I believe that the tutors were always here to help and highly responsive. As a student you get to interact with your tutor in terms of clarifying any question on a module which is of immense help.

The BPTC at Northumbria University shaped me in improving my advocacy.
