On the 29th July, 12pm-1.30pm, Northumbria University will deliver a dissemination event (online on MS Teams) to share the findings from the national Restorative Just Culture (RJC) research study and to reflect on the experiences of organisations that have implemented RJC approaches across the NHS.

In 2023, Northumbria University, supported by NHS England and working in partnership with Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, commenced a national study to explore the implementation and effectiveness of restorative just culture interventions across NHS organisations. The study was developed in response to growing policy and organisational interest in restorative and just culture approaches and the limited empirical evidence available regarding how these approaches are implemented in healthcare settings.

The research focused on organisations that had participated in the RJC programme and sought to understand how learning from the programme had been translated into practice. Through interviews involving participants from 43 NHS Trusts and 2 Hospices across England and Northern Ireland, the study explored how RJC was defined and understood, the reasons organisations chose to implement it, the interventions and implementation activities developed, the barriers and enablers encountered, and the outcomes achieved.

The event is open to all NHS organisations that have participated in the research study or have been a participant of the Northumbria University and Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust Principles and Practices of Restorative Just Culture programme. It will provide an opportunity to share the key findings from the study, hear reflections from participating organisations, and discuss what the findings mean for the future development of restorative just culture policy and practice across the NHS. We will also be sharing details of our suite of RJC workforce development programmes which have now been extended to include a Train the Trainer model.
