Northumbria leading the way in corporate responsibility

22nd November 2018

In the past few years, many businesses have developed sustainable strategies where social responsibility is an integral part of their business model.

In response to this strategic shift, Northumbria University, Newcastle, is offering the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Certificate in Environmental Management.

The five-day course, which takes place at Northumbria’s Newcastle city campus, has been developed for managers, supervisors and employees who have responsibility for managing environmental issues as part of their working role.

The course is designed to benefit companies in all industry sectors who are seeking to apply effective environmental management systems and to provide line managers with a sound understanding of environmental risk.

It is led by Anna-Lisa Mills, Director of True North Sustainability, who has 20 years’ experience in developing, applying and leading environmental and sustainability strategies for a wide range of organisations from SMEs to large multi-national organisations.

She said: “Having taught this NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate course all over the UK over the last 10 years, it is great to be able to offer it in my home town of Newcastle.

“The training facilities at the recently renovated CPD suite at Northumbria University are second to none and the delegates and I were all well looked after by the team.”

The modules are taught through a series of interactive lectures during which the topics are related to workplace experiences of class members. In addition, videos, slides and practical inspections, for example of the University facilities, are incorporated into the sessions so that the material is kept relevant and interesting.

Dr Michael Deary, Associate Professor in Geography and Environmental Sciences, is head of NEBOSH programmes at Northumbria University, and worked with Anna-Lisa to secure accreditation for the new Environmental Management Certificate.

“The University is really proud to be delivering this internationally recognised qualification in environmental management,” said Michael. “The addition of the NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management to our existing portfolio of NEBOSH qualifications reflects a growing need in the workplace for professionals who have the skills and knowledge that will allow their companies to demonstrate environmental and social responsibility as well as commitment to sustainability.

“We have hosted an incredibly successful first course, exemplified by the delegate feedback, which consistently praised the passionate and knowledgeable way in which the course was delivered by Anna-Lisa Mills. I saw for myself how engaged and committed the delegates were, and I know they will take this passion for the environment back to their workplaces”
