Dr Anita Garvey

Dr. Anita Garvey is an Assistant Professor in Organisational Studies at Northumbria University. Her research areas involve deploying the lens of critical theory and critical management studies to analyse workplace phenomena related to power, inequity and mistreatment within organisations, contextualised by neoliberal capitalism.

Anita is a critical scholar whose qualitative research has focused on the concept of ‘moralistic' workplace bullying in a neoliberalised UK Public Sector, increasingly characterised by marketisation using Gramsci’s theory of ideological hegemony. Her interests include the connectivity between material and ideational forces and their dialectical influence upon organisations.

From a feminist perspective, Anita also has an interest in patriarchy, social stratification and class, entailing examining their intersectionality, and their implications for societal and workplace inequality.

Dr Anita Garvey particularly specialises in qualitative research and has an interest in Critical Discourse Analysis, Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis and Reflexive Thematic Analysis. Her areas of research include power relationships, morality and dehumanisation, and negative behaviours that can emerge in the workplace from a phenomenological perspective.

Anita is a Programme Leader, Module Tutor and Dissertation Supervisor, and since her arrival at the university has been nominated for student awards in the category of Best Lecturer and Best Pastoral Support.
