Our Alumni - Work For Us
I am currently an Associate Professor in Electrical Engineering and Head of the Electrical Power and Control Systems Research Group at Northumbria University. Since joining the University in 2020, I have also served as Programme Leader for the MSc in Electrical Power Engineering and Chair of the Delivery Group at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Renewable Energy Northeast Universities (ReNU), a collaboration between Northumbria, Newcastle and Durham.
Prior to Northumbria, I worked as a Research Associate in Prof. Volker Pickert’s team at Newcastle University, contributing to EPSRC and Innovate UK projects on wide-bandgap power devices, EV charging, and compact DC/DC converters. My earlier PhD at Newcastle University (2016) focused on nonlinear modelling and advanced control of power electronics, building on my MSc from Zhejiang University and BEng from Chongqing University.
My current research is supported by major projects, including an Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Tridonic Ltd. to develop a PV-powered outdoor lighting system with advanced battery management. In 2018, I won the Siemens European Competition in Power Electronics for work on bidirectional wireless power transfer. Since 2020, I have been an Associate Editor of IET Power Electronics (Outstanding Editor Award 2023). I serve as a National Committee member, Technical Programme Chair for IEEE ECCE Europe 2025, Theme Chair for IEEE PEAS 2025, and have held leadership roles at ISEEIE 2024, IEEE PEAC 2022 and CoEEPE. I am also an IEEE Senior Member and Counselor for the IEEE Northumbria University Student Branch.
A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, I have taught across MSc and undergraduate programmes, including modules on Smart Energy Systems, Renewable Energy Technologies, and Analogue Electronics. I currently supervise four PhD students and multiple MSc/UG projects.
My research interests span high-efficiency power conversion, advanced control for EVs and renewable energy networks, condition monitoring of wide-bandgap modules, and wireless power transfer. I have published over 60 peer-reviewed papers and collaborate widely with industry. I welcome inquiries from prospective PhD students interested in these areas.
