If you prefer to live alone with your own bathroom and kitchen, a studio will cost you more per week, but if you don’t mind sharing a kitchen with others, you can save a little by living in shared accommodation, so that’s something to keep in mind.

We offer catered accommodation at Claude Gibb, and here you’ll receive two meals per day served at the dining hall. For those students who prefer to live in self-catered accommodation but do not want to cook every day, we would recommend that you download the Uni Food Hub app on your smartphone which can be used to pay for catering around campus. Family and friends can also top up your Uni Food Hub app and pre-pay for meals for you. Just make sure all your family have your login details before you leave for Uni.

If you want to join the revolution on food waste, download the Too Good To Go smartphone app. This app allows you to rescue delicious food so you can eat well with a clean conscious at all catering outlets on campus.

Alternatively, there are also plenty of supermarkets close to campus where you can get your groceries to cook all of your favourite meals.

Newcastle is a great place for shopping, and there’s lots of offer to suit everyone, from students on a budget to more high-end fashion pieces, you’ll not be short of choice. Newcastle City Centre is just a 5-minute walk from our city campus where you’ll find Northumberland Street and Eldon Square, one of the UK’s largest city centre shopping malls. Or you can take a short bus ride to our large indoor shopping mall, Metrocentre which is located in Gateshead. Newcastle also has a wide variety of boutiques and markets.

Don’t forget, during Black Friday, Easter and Christmas, shops offer a range of extra discounts and sales, and you can also take advantage of year-round student discount at lots of shops and restaurants using your TOTUM card.

If going to the cinema to watch the latest movie releases is a must for you, you prefer to hang out with your friends or you love keeping fit, we’ve got you covered.

The Students’ Union offers a great social scene at the heart of our City Campus. The Union building features three award-winning bars and it’s the venue for some of the biggest club nights and gigs in Newcastle.

There are a huge range of clubs and societies that you can join. With all our thousands of students, there are sure to be people who share your enthusiasms and want to try new activities. If you enjoy any sport at any level, we’re the place to be. Join ‘Team Northumbria’ or learn a new sport.

Or you can join ‘Team Northumbria’ or learn and new sport and make use of fantastic facilities that include our £30 million flagship ‘Sport Central’. Sport Central offers student memberships from £200 a year, giving you access to our fully equipped gym, 25m swimming pool, sauna and steam room, and 60+ instructor-led weekly exercise classes.

Our transport links in Newcastle and Gateshead are fantastic, so if you to get out an explore our city, countryside or coastline there are many options to get around, from our Tyne and Wear Metro to our buses and trains.

If you want to explore other cities in the UK during your studies, then you can travel around the country via trains from our Newcastle Central Station, or you can also fly to many destinations in the UK from our Newcastle International Airport, including London, Scotland and Ireland.
