(Multi)Cultural Heritage: New Perspectives on Public Culture, Identity and Citizenship

28 February 2018: Kommunity, Newcastle

  • 11am: Welcome - Susan Ashley, Northumbria University. Introduction to the (Multi)Cultural heritage project.
  • 11:15am: Show and Tell - a 5-10-minute introduction from each organisation using an object that represents what they do.
  • 12:15pm: Lunch - Wildflower Foods presents a Mexican-themed vegetarian buffet
  • 1pm: Group discussion 1 – ‘Motivations’ – Breakouts into small groups then reassemble for group discussion
  • 1:45pm: Group Discussion 2 – ‘Issues’- Breakouts into small groups then reassemble for group discussion
  • 2:30pm: Next Steps? – Next workshop (May/June) will work on ‘what is heritage?’ in your personal and organisational context. Ideas for research directions for the project.

  • 10am: Field Trip – Manchester Jewish Museum – Meet at Victoria train station, 9:40
  • 11:30am: Welcome and Introductions – Susan Ashley, Northumbria University
  • 12pm: Your Heritage Activities - a 5-10-minute discussion from each organisation about one activity they consider to be ‘heritage’ oriented, and why.
  • 1pm: Lunch - CfCCA presents a Chinese-themed vegetarian buffet
  • 1:30pm: Group discussion 1 – ‘What is Heritage?’ – Breakouts into smaller groups then reassemble for group discussion
  • 2:30pm: Group Discussion 2 – ‘Heritage Issues’- Breakouts into smaller groups then reassemble for group discussion
  • 4pm: Next Steps? – Workshop 3 (October) “Impact”: your organisation plus ideas for this project.

  • 10:30am: Your Impact - a 5-10-minute discussion from each organisation about the impact of their organisation on ‘culture’ and ‘heritage’ or ‘identity’ in their community.
  • 12pm: Guest Antonia Canal – HLF Development Officer and Museum Detox speaker will address ideas on ‘impact’ and decolonising museum spaces.
  • 1pm: Lunch - a Persian-themed buffet prepared by Rose Restaurant
  • 1:30pm: Group discussion 1 – ‘Impacting’ – Breakouts into smaller groups then reassemble for group discussion
  • 2:30pm: Group Discussion 2 – ‘This Project’s Impact – Planning a Final Event’ - Breakouts into smaller groups then reassemble for group discussion
  • 3:45pm: Next Steps? – Workshop 4 (March 2019) ‘Policy’: ideas and subgroup for impacting policy.

  • 9:30am: Welcome, Introductions and Updates – Dr Susan Ashley, Principal Investigator, (Multi)Cultural Heritage project
  • 9:45am: Partners and Policy – brief discussion from each partner organisation in the (Multi)Cultural Heritage project about a cultural policy issue that they have faced that has affected or impacted their organisation
  • 11:15am: Break
  • 11:30am: Agencies and Policy – Five agencies involved in heritage present a brief talk about their policies and decision-making that address inequalities, followed by questions and discussion. Participants:
