Focusing on patients who have palliative care needs, this module will enable you to examine your practice when caring for this vulnerable group.

We will consider the holistic needs of the patient and their carers and you will be encouraged to reflect on your experiences from clinical practice, in order to explore how these could be enhanced.

You will also explore local and national developments in palliative care and critically appraise the social and political trends that influence delivery.

We will use patient narratives to explore the experiences of the palliative care patient and enable you to develop a deeper understanding of principles and practices. You will also consider the needs of cancer and non-cancer patients and the informational needs of patients and their family.

This module will allow you to adopt a flexible learning approach in order to develop specific knowledge related to the principles of palliative care in both the cancer patient and patients suffering diseases other than cancer.

  • Compare and contrast the needs of the cancer and non-cancer patient
  • The emotional cancer journey
  • Ethical issues in palliative care
  • Quality of life issues
  • Patient perspectives
  • The last days of life
  • Caring for the lay carer and bereavement support
  • The information needs of the palliative care patient and their family

Level 5 study

This module will enable the practitioner to critically examine their practice when caring for this vulnerable group of patients, and will consider the holistic needs of the patient and their carers. Participants will be encouraged to reflect and explore personal experiences arising from their own clinical practice in order to consider enhancing their professional practice.

  • Explore how the principles of palliative care can be applied in a variety of settings, throughout the patient journey.
  • Critically appraise the social and political trends that influence the delivery of palliative care.
  • Critically evaluate how palliative care principles may be relevant to patients with non-malignant disease.
  • Critically reflect on the holistic needs of the palliative care patient and their family considering the challenges in professional practice.
