This hands-on course ensures you gain relevant academic knowledge and practical skills from the outset using our high-quality, current technology and on-site laboratories.
At Northumbria you will experience first hand knowledge of the built environment and the wider environmental context. The programme will focus on all the appropriate elements for the initial stages of developing you as a Northumbria Graduate and ultimately as an undergraduate degree student. The learning outcomes for the Built Environment programme and the modules have been mapped against the professional development requirements and the competencies required by this industry.
Northumbria foundation year students have a mature, intellectual curiosity through an examination and understanding of professional practice, current theories, policy and real-life practice. As a result, you will be able to develop and apply your academic knowledge and experience of research skills to your chosen degree programme.
You will be taught by a diverse group of built environment related professionals. Their background, knowledge and experience in both practice and academia, and the emphasis and support of a research rich learning environment, will allow you to develop a research rich, practice based experience and encourage you to carry on your studies in an undergraduate programme.

You’ll learn through a variety of methods including lectures and seminars, practical use of tools and equipment, laboratory work, professional speakers as well as guided and self-study. You’ll get the chance to work as an individual and learn with others in group situations.
Assessments are designed to help you develop both general and discipline specific knowledge as well as developing transferable skills including communication, research and team work that will prepare you for progression onto your chosen undergraduate degree.
You’ll be supported by the Foundation Year team to help you transition to university life and develop the skills you need to plan, manage and review your progress throughout your studies.
Your tutors are a diverse group of experts in the built and natural environment with a genuine passion for their subject. With backgrounds and experience in both academic teaching and practice, they bring real-life experience to your learning.
Whatever direction your studies take you, you’ll find the latest technology to support you in dedicated laboratories and studios.
Survey, visualise and model your work with access to facilities including a modelling workshop, rapid prototyping room, building and materials laboratories and a virtual reality studio as well as group and individual study areas. Alternatively if Geography and the Environment is your interest, you will have access to state of the art laboratory facilities and a range of field equipment and specialist software, including a qualitative research suite and social spaces for our student community.
You’ll be encouraged to take your ideas out of the University and into the world around you on field trips and site visits while remote access to course materials helps support assessment work and revision.
Our Architecture department is located in a modern state-of-the-art development in central Newcastle.
Your tutors and lecturers are drawn from a team of professionals and experts in built and natural environments. Their experience and background in research, industry and academic teaching will help you to develop your own research rich, practical experience to support you in further study on your chosen degree course.
As a foundation student you’ll gain the intellectual and practical skills to place you in a great position to go forward to further study or employment.
By understanding current theories, policy and real-life professional practice, you’ll be able to develop and apply your academic knowledge and research skills to your chosen degree course.
The Faculty has a dedicated support team to help you gain placements in relevant industries and connect you to employers promoting graduate vacancies. You may go on to work in planning, surveying or careers in sustainability, greening business, environmental management, and conservation, and fields as diverse as housing, cartography, pollution control, urban regeneration, local government, overseas development and teaching.

English Language Requirements:
International applicants should have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with 5.5 in each component (or an approved equivalent*).

UK Fee in Year 1: £9,535
* This is the tuition fee for your first year of study. You should expect to pay tuition fees for every year of study. The University may increase fees in the second and subsequent years of your course at our discretion in line with any inflationary or other uplift, as decided by the UK Government, up to the maximum amount for fees permitted by UK law or regulation for that academic year. To give students an indication of the likely scale of any future increase, the UK government has recently suggested that increases may be linked to RPIX ( Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments) * Fees subject to annual increases over the course of the period of study. Students will be liable for payment of any/all tuition fees which are not sponsored by their employer or other third party.

Full time Courses are primarily delivered via on-campus face to face learning but could include elements of online learning.
