At every level of study, you'll develop vocationally relevant experience and skills; such as event management, strategic and economic planning, social media management, and sport marketing. You'll also develop transferable skills in areas such as; communication, negotiation, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.
The modules respond to the distinctive needs of international sports organisations. Therefore, the course has been designed from the outset as a sport management degree, rather than a business degree with a few sport modules attached. Learning in this sport rich environment provides numerous opportunities for you to engage in CPD, volunteering, access a variety of sports networks, and to undertake a placement with a local sport organisation – alternatively, you may choose to complete a placement with an international partner.
Due to our unique learning and teaching experience, you'll graduate from our degree with a rounded knowledge of specific and transferable management skills, which are desirable to a variety of graduate-level employers.

The philosophy of this course is that you will learn to become a sports manager in an authentic, dynamic, interactive and supportive environment, graduating as a fully industry-ready individual who can think for yourself and make informed judgements. This means that, as well as actively engaging in lectures, seminars and workshops, you will undertake field trips and group projects.
Our assessments are based on the types of tasks that sports managers are required to perform, such as writing reports, making presentations, evaluating information and developing strategic plans. For example, in your final year you will have the option to use all of your knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and evaluate a sport event of your choosing.
Previous events have included: charity golf days, sport dinners, events to support public health initiatives, zorb football, the RFL North East season launch, the Sky Super-league Netball Launch, and an annual five-day swimming gala.
Whether you are interested in traditional sport, emerging sports, e-sports, or marketing through sport, Sport Management BSc (Hons) has been designed to support your academic and vocational development.
Based on robust management theory, you will engage with topics as diverse as social media marketing, economics and finance, sport event management, strategic planning, resource management, and personal branding, all within the context of sport.
The course is taught in a sport department, rather than a business school, by staff with significant sport business experience and contacts with industry partners. What this means is that all of your modules are related to sport and are taught by people who understand the relationship between theory, practice, and industry requirements.
Predominantly housed in Sport Central, our facilities include an indoor 40-metre sprint track, a range of state-of-the-art sport science laboratories and an environmental chamber that allows students and researchers to manipulate environmental conditions to mimic anywhere in the world. These facilities are complemented by multi-functional learning spaces and afford our students hands-on experience to enhance their development as researchers and practitioners.
The Libraries offer learning spaces to meet various needs, from silent or quiet study to social and collaborative learning. You'll be able to find the right learning space for you, whether you want to focus, free from distraction or work as part of a group. You'll also have access to an extensive collection of scholarly resources, including books, ebooks, print and e-journals, databases, collections of early historical books and primary digital archives.
Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists to guide your preparation for seminars and independent research.

Northumbria's research ethos underpins the problem-based, experiential learning approaches embedded within our research-rich curriculum. This approach will equip you to apply and develop knowledge in ‘real world’ situations, mindful of the cultural context and able to act ethically with integrity.
Our sport management teaching team are active researchers in their chosen specialisms, and they routinely incorporate their expertise into their teaching. The team are currently researching topics as diverse as social media used by sports organisations, the transfer of sport assets from local authorities to trusts, enabling and exploiting user-created content at sports events, forming sports organisations for emerging sports, consumer influences on sport marketing, and sport as a social identity.
Your critical thinking will be developed during the course when you undertake an independent research project. Your project will involve choosing an appropriate research problem that interests you, designing a study to answer a stated research question and then writing up a dissertation.
We're ranked 5th in the UK for Research Power (REF 2021)
Throughout your degree you will acquire a portfolio of industry relevant experience, including undertaking a 12-week sport management industry placement, and planning and implementing a sport event in your final year. On graduation you will be well-placed to take advantage of growing global requirement for qualified sport managers.
Sport is a competitive, fast-paced, growing industry offering a wealth of high-profile exciting careers. Studying sport management at Northumbria will ensure that you are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to meet the challenges and opportunities provided by sport in the 21st century.
