Our AlumniDr Amy Newman
Dr Newman is the course lead on our Psychology MSc. She studied at Sheffield Hallam University as an undergraduate, before earning her PhD in Psychology here at Northumbria. Her research follows the evolutionary mechanisms behind partner choice, and victim blaming in sexual assault cases, along with the prevalence of harmful sexual behaviours.
Dr Mark Moss
Dr Mark Moss is head of our Department of Psychology. A Chartered Psychologist and fellow of the BPS, he is passionate about all areas of psychology, having initially studied at Northumbria before joining the teaching team almost three decades ago. He now heads up a team of over 50 staff, delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education to over 1,000 students. Alongside his role as department head, he has a strong research interest in improving mental performance and mood through natural interventions, such as essential oils and plant extracts.

Dr Jenny Paterson
Jenny is an experimental social psychologist specialising in understanding and alleviating the intergroup and interpersonal impacts of prejudice. After receiving her Psychology BSc from Berry College, USA, she gained a Masters in Social Psychology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Upon returning to the UK, she took up Research Assistant at the University of Leeds, where she also gained prestigious University Research Scholarship to complete her PhD. Jenny later held positions at the University of Sussex and Teesside University, before joining Northumbria as a Senior Lecturer in Psychology in July 2019.
Jenny values interdisciplinary and international collaboration; she has worked with colleagues across disciplines - including Midwifery, Law and Criminology - and across countries, including Canada, USA and Poland. She is also a member of the International Network of Hate Studies and the Identification With All Humanity Lab.

Dr Libby Orme
As well as being an Associate Professor of Learning and Teaching, Libby is also the Deputy Head of the Department of Psychology. As a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she primarily engages in research related to learning and teaching and has a strong interest in student community and wellbeing, the use of technology in higher education and academic staff development.
After investigating the integration of long-term and short-term visual memory during her doctoral thesis, much of her research has been focused on how novel visual information is grouped in memory to reduce information load, the cognitive processes involved and the ERP components associated with encoding and retrieval of such material.
