Our Alumni - Work For Us
What appealed to you about Northumbria University / studying in Newcastle?
I’m originally from Beverley, East Yorkshire and when I came to look around Northumbria I was definitely impressed with the balance between the academic and social sides of University life. Newcastle nightlife is definitely one of the best.
What was it about the course / subject area that particularly appealed?
When I came to the Northumbria University Open Day I was really interested with what the Psychology department had to offer and thought that the course programme touched on a number of aspects within Psychology that I wanted to study further.
What qualifications did you have?
I applied via the UCAS website during Sixth Form, where I did my three A-levels in Psychology, History and English Literature.
How did you feel during your first week at Northumbria?
I really enjoyed my first week at Northumbria, it was completely hectic, but I was constantly meeting new people in halls and on my course. Everyone’s in the same position of not knowing anybody so you bond friendships quickly, and I’m still good friends with most of the people I met in my first week.
What do you like most about the course?
I mostly enjoy the practical side of Psychology, it can be difficult sometimes but definitely worth it when you achieve the outcome you are aiming for.
Can you give an example of a piece of work you’ve been involved with recently?
I’m currently starting my dissertation looking at the effects of Sleep Deprivation on mood, memory and reaction time, it’s definitely hard work, especially researching previous studies before even beginning participant testing, but an interesting area of psychology as partial sleep deprivation is something most people have experienced at some point.
How do you get on with your tutors?
My tutor is Nick Neave, who I get along with well, most of the lecturers are always happy to help and answer any queries I’ve had, which definitely makes a difference to your academic experience and being able to achieve the best marks possible.
What do you do when you’re not studying?
When I’m not studying I work part-time at Hollister, and TupTup Palace Nightclub.
What’s your accommodation like?
My accommodation is really good, I live right in the centre of Newcastle, five minutes from the train station and 15 minutes from the University and the rent's a lot cheaper than other areas of Newcastle (like Jesmond).
What would you like to do when you graduate?
When I started my course I was interested in going into teaching after my degree, but now I’ve been looking into the graduate schemes available for Psychology graduates.
Have you used Student Services during your course?
I’ve used the Northumbria Careers Centre which I found really helpful, and the staff had a lot of good advice on work experience I need to gain, and different channels to look into concerning the career path I’m interested in.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course, or for university in general?
Look at as many different universities and courses as you can to make sure you make the right decision as to where you want to spend at least the next three years.
What three words would you use to describe your time at Northumbria?
Challenging, exciting, drunk.
