Our Alumni - Work For Us
Where are you from?
York
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
Very good reputation for design and Architecture. Suitable study style too. As well as a comfortable campus compared to other universities. Overall great experience.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
Newcastle is a great place to live, not too commercial nor too small. Wonderful atmosphere and learning environment. Nights out are always a bonus in Newcastle as well as it being very safe and clean compared to other larger cities.
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
Much easier to live in a large city than I thought - being from York I anticipated Newcastle being larger than it is. Its easy to navigate and 'geordies' exceed their reputation being friendly.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
Fairly easy to fit it. Started first year in 'halls' which was a good option becoming more independent. Always see people you know around campus. Friendly place to study.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
Fairly impressed with the facilities and great to have studio space to make your own. Even if I work from home quite a lot.
Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?
One lecturer in specific I feel is extremely passionate and can bring this out in the students, Manuel Cresciani, architecture history and theory tutor.
What is your favourite place on campus?
The Zone is a pretty decent space to work in with computers as well as sofas and group spaces. A more relaxed atmosphere to work stress free.
Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?
No. Architecture is much much more demanding than other courses as proven by the four people I live with. Some of them work a month what I do in a week and they still receive a First. However, every course has its on reputation, Architecture reflects the workload in its reputation.
What is the best thing about your course?
Meeting new people from literally around the world, Latvia, China, Wales and Singapore. The best part is seeing a culmination of ideas, artistic flair and styles from around the world, all inspiring one another.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
Time management has to be up there for my course. A few days off DOES effect your final week workload. But turning feedback and criticism into development in a design has been fun too.
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
That I dislike wasting time hand drawing, however important it is. Although I have improved in this, along with other designing techniques.
Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?
Not a placement yet however I have my own work lines up creating visuals for a company, working in drafting with an engineer and designing in an architects office.
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
If you want to experience the university life, grow as a person and still gain the degree you need for some sort of future then Northumbria is your place to study.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
A realisation of what life's about, you get what you work for. Coming to Northumbria expecting to get every job you apply for is basically idiotic. Work for what you want and you will get it.
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Exciting, experience, productive!
Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
Yes!
