Types of Postgraduate Study

There is a large variety of postgraduate courses you can take from taught degrees, research degrees professional courses and even conversion courses if you ever decide to change direction!

Difference between a taught and research course?

Taught courses are usually 1 year long. They explore several modules and are assessed using the combination of course work, exams and a dissertation. Very similar to undergraduate study where you attend timetabled seminars and lectures.

A research course involves completing you own original academic research presenting your advanced knowledge of your field. You will still receive guidance and support from an expert supervisor.

Research

  • Master of Arts (MA) – usually awarded in arts or social sciences subject courses.
  • Master of Science (MSc) – awarded to science subject courses.
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) – Can be taken both full-time or part-time. This course provides a key understanding in business practices and is highly valued by employers.
  • Master of Research (MRes) – provides training on how to become a researcher and contains a significant research element. Usually taken when an individual wants to pursue a PhD or a career in research.
  • Master by Research (MPhil) – This course allows you to focus on a particular topic in-depth and complete a research project on it. This usually takes longer to accomplish than other types of masters degrees.

Conversion courses

A conversion course allows you to change direction and gain a qualification in a subject area which differs from your undergraduate degree. We offer a variety of courses that don’t need prior knowledge of that subject area from Architecture to Law.
