Job Title: AI Innovation Engineer
Vacancy Type: Graduate Internship
Duration: Paid part-time internship – 33.5 hrs working per week for 6 weeks.
Vacancy summary:
IMIS Global Ltd requires a competent and creative junior AI engineer for the development of innovative software predictive navigation tools using AI and data analytics with a view towards ports transitioning to a ‘smart port’ status. This is part of the UK government agenda enabling ports to become carbon neutral, enhance logistic operations and improve safety by 2050. IMIS Global is part of this scenario providing unparalleled navigation aids systems around the world to many significant maritime players.
Purpose of internship:The vision is to innovate and introduce through this pilot project a new application of AI in the current MariWeb system. High priorities are to enhance capabilities designed to smooth the movement of shipping at local, regional and ultimately global levels. Innovation of the use of historical and real-time data is key in developing predictive and more reliable models. This will enable IMIS Global to offer a different approach to better vessel planning and operations at a global level.
Objectives of the role
To develop AI and data work outputs and system enhancements according to the key aims stated above.
This is a unique opportunity for a Computing graduate to be working on an ambitious project which will involve:
- Research and exploration
- Concept ideas generation + ideas selection
- AI work development
The graduate will be in a unique position to work on advanced software development process and have his/her AI work potentially entering prototype stage before being refined for software release.
Professional experiences and interests:
- Reliable and professional attitude required alongside an enthusiasm and passion for innovative use of AI and big data development in a maritime environment.
- Solid AI and machine learning skills alongside programming/coding capabilities.
- Confidence in advising IMIS Global team on a broad range of pertinent technology, strategy, and policy issues associated with AI within the proposed pilot project.
- Ability to work on functional process design (including scenario design, flow mapping), prototyping, testing, and defining support procedures, in collaboration with an advanced software team and executive leadership.
- Preparedness to articulate and document the solutions architecture and lessons learned for each exploration and proposed solution.
- Willingness to learn quickly and take on board advice and more technical feedback to improve AI development work at any stage of the project.
- Administrative skills
- Good communication and presentation skills.
- Strong organisational skills.
Desirable:
- A spirit of initiative and interest of the creation of innovative AI ideas, well-conceived and properly developed through cycles of iteration.
- Ability to produce effective data visualisation.
Location: Northumbria University city campus, in Newcastle city centre.

Salary range: £9.50 per hour for 200 hrs
