Job Title: Communication Designer
Vacancy Type: Graduate internship
Duration: Part-time 33 hrs per week for one person or 16.5 hours per week for two people over 6 weeks (flexible hours permitted)
Organisation Summary:
Kids Kabin is a charity working in low-income communities in Newcastle and Middlesbrough. We enable children and young people, aged 7-13 to learn new skills and build their confidence by taking part in creative and practical workshops. Workshops include pottery, woodwork, cookery, bike maintenance and arts and crafts. Each year, over 1300 children and young people participate in Kids Kabin activities.
Vacancy Summary:
We want a designer to create a campaign or potential products or services that help communicate the positive impact of the work on children and young people to our funders and other stakeholders, including parents, schools, other organisations and the participants themselves.
We are looking to develop one or more of the following:
· A creative, high-impact way of telling the Kids Kabin story to a range of stakeholders (communication)
· Alternative and innovative ways for children’s voices to be shared (communication/product or service development)
· Exciting and accessible ways for children to communicate with others from different places – exploring ways to break down barriers and build relationships (communication/product or service development)
Please note, the copyright or intellectual property of whatever is developed will remain with Kids Kabin once the internship is complete.
Role Description:
The graduate intern will have the opportunity to:
Build on and develop one or several initial proposals created by postgraduate design students at Northumbria University.
Work with staff, volunteers and partners, including Will Benson and Chris Avanti at Kids Kabin, to ensure the proposal meets the charity’s needs.
Consult and communicate with young people and families to get their input in the process.
Take the concept/s to a fully implementable and tested design, prototype or service that is adaptable and maintainable by Kids Kabin.
Personal qualities and skills required to fulfil the role:
· Problem solver – someone who is analytical in their approach and creative in developing solutions.
· Communication design skills, including creating printed and digital communications that may include video production.
· Some experience in content design, service design and education/instructional design would be desirable but not essential.
· Interpersonal skills – happy to work with others on-site and remotely where necessary.
· Initiative – the ability to work autonomously under supervision.
· Drive – highly motivated and determined to get the details right.
