What are you doing now?Viengdalat Somphet

I am currently working as a Junior Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Laos, I also work part time as freelance Interpreter/Translator, and part-time volunteer for local initiatives to help those in need.

What was it about Northumbria that made you decide to study here?

The University itself was already an attractive place to me, I loved Newcastle, people were so welcoming and friendly, and the University had the best student support system. It was a great place to live and study and the International Development Course offered such a vibrant learning environment with both the lecturers and students from all over the world.

What was it like studying at Northumbria?

It was really great experience studying at Northumbria, I liked how the classes were conducted and every lesson we had a chance to discuss and exchange ideas with other students. The course was very stimulating and engaging and every day I learnt something new from different people. The seminars were always interesting to me.

What was the best thing about your course?

The diversity of the class and the up-to-date, contemporary lessons offered.

How did studying at Northumbria help you achieve your career goals/ give your career an edge?

Northumbria gave me a chance to get exposed to an international and vibrant environment, which help me to gain professional experience especially in terms of a foreign language and new knowledge.

Which skills/knowledge did you learn on your course that you use most now throughout your career?

I think the critical thinking process and the constant engagement via class activities have helped me a lot to on my career path.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Northumbria University?

Classmate socialisation.

What advice would you give somebody who is considering studying at Northumbria?

I would definitely recommended them to come and study at Northumbria University - it has the best kind of learning environment, cutting edge knowledge and a fantastic campus, especially the library.
