Ms Cay Green

Cay Green is a designer with over ten years experience, eight in the private sector. Upon completing a BA (Hons) and MA in Industrial Design at Teesside University in 1998, Cay worked with a local manufacturing company designing class leading products for the global market. In 2006 Cay took the opportunity to investigate Sustainable Design via a full time MA at the University for the Creative Arts. Cay has since worked with the Centre for Design Research on a wide variety of projects with local individuals and businesses.

Cay is currently supervising a Knowledge Transfer Partnership helping to oversee the development and implementation of a Design Management Framework in a local manufacturing firm.

In addition, Cay has recently brought her knowledge of responsible design practices to the MA, delivering session exploring sustainability and responsibility in design practice.

Talking Point

Cay is interested in the role of design beyond service to industry. Are there limits to the role design can play in the generation of socially equitable products and services? What role can design have in facilitating the exploration of less resource intensive lifestyles? How can design practitioners be encouraged to engage in a meaningful and productive exploration of responsible design practices?

Research Themes and Scholarly Interests

During her Masters Degree in Sustainable Design, Cay explored individual attitudes towards ‘sustainability’ through co-design workshops. In the intervening time Cay has continued to investigate attitudes towards sustainability and the influence of culture, with the intention of perusing a doctorate.

Cay’s interest in sustainability extends to manufacturing techniques, material and the designer’s potential role as ‘editor’ of goods and services.

Cay has applied her knowledge of Sustainable Design on several occasions, for example, Ma validation panel and curriculum co-design workshop facilitator.

Key Publications

Cay has recently been involved with several design projects leading to proposals for innovative design proposals that attempt to reduce resource use. One project resulted in a patient application for a product that has the potential to greatly reduce the energy required to dry compressed air. In addition to project work, Cay is involved with carrying out feasibility studies into potential health and wellbeing product and service proposals.
