Dr David (Zhiwei) Gao

Before joining Northumbria University, he held research and academic positions respectively in Newcaslte University, University of Liverpool, University of Leicester, University of Manchester, University of Duisburg-Essen, and Tianjin University.

He was elevated to IEEE Fellow for contributions to real-time diagnosis and control for wind turbine systems in 2023. He was awarded the RAEng / Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship devoting to real-time diagnosis and health management for wave energy conversion systems in 2024. He is also the Fellow of AAIA, Fellow of AIIA, and Fellow of HEA. In 2025, he was included in the 2025 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list.

Dr. Gao is currently the Co-Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, Senior Editor of IEEE Access, Section Editor-in-Chief of Processes, Assoicate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Systems Man and Cybernetics: Systems, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles, and the editorial board member of Renewable Energy (Elsevier).

He was the Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Transactions on Industral Electronics, and ISA Transactions (Elsevier), and the Area Editor of Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing (Springer).
