Assistant Professor

Department: Northumbria School of Design, Arts and Creative Industries

My Research

I am currently undertaking a PhD entitled: ‘Parallel Stories: Reconstructing men’s dress history through an archaeology of pattern making and garment construction’. This object-based study aims to draw and record conclusions about the provenance and construction processes employed by cutters and manufacturers, after personally examining historical garment artefacts.

My Interests

For me, great fashion clothing is about attention to detail not only in its design, but also in its construction and styling. Inspired by vintage clothing I am passionate about using this reference as a design resource both academically and as a freelance designer to produce original, innovative and contemporary designs. My design approach combines observational drawing skills to extract and record the cut, construction and fabrication in detail. I like to maintain a hands-on approach to teaching and my knowledge of pattern-cutting and manufacturing allows me to help students deliver products true to their original fashion concept.

Areas of Expertise

An experienced fashion educator and industry practitioner, my area of expertise is in garment design, pattern-cutting and product development. My specialisms are men’s semi-formal, casualwear and sportswear.

My Industrial Experience

OiPolloi, Craig Green, Le Chameau, North Sails, Nigel Cabourn, Barbour, Ted Baker, Goodhood Store London, Viberg Boot Company, Manufactum, Alexander Boyd, Intrepid Apparel, Jitsie.
