Jo Weallans

School: Communities and Education

Jo is a Lecturer within the Children and Young People's Psycological Trainings team, with Module and Programme Leadership responsibilities for the PG Dip in Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Studies in Community and Primary Care Environments. She joined the University in 2023, having previously worked as a qualified Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner and Senior Practitioner across Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and education-based Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs).

Jo originally trained in Creative Expressive Therapies before completing her postgraduate CWP training at Northumbria University in 2019. Her clinical experience is predominantly in early intervention and low-intensity psychological practice with children, young people and families, including individual and community-based approaches. Prior to training as a CWP, Jo worked in youth services, including work with LGBT+ young people. She has also completed postgraduate training in supervision and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Jo’s teaching and professional interests include low-intensity psychological interventions, early intervention, community approaches to children and young people’s mental health, and the development and training of the psychological professions workforce. She is also an External Examiner for CWP training at the University of Reading.

Jo contributes to research and scholarship within the CYP psychological professions team, with current interests including EDI and cultural competence in psychological practice, alongside adapting practice to better meet the needs of neurodivergent children and young people and those with learning disabilities.
