Our Alumni - Work For Us
We’ve created this bespoke IT at Amsterdam page to help you find your way at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS) campus. If you have any queries, please contact the IT Servce Desk and they will be able to assist.
You will find you have two logins, one from Northumbria University and one from Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS). You’ll need each of them for various activities:
| Northumbria | AUAS ID & Password | |
| Blackboard | Y | X |
| Y | X | |
| Library Catalogue & Resources | Y | X |
| Library PCs | X | Y |
| Office 365 | Y | X |
| Printing | X | Y |
| Simply Web | Y | X |
| Software Downloads | Y | X |
| Student Portal | Y | X |
| WiFi Access - AUAS | X | Y |
| WiFi Access - Eduroam | Y | X |
| For more information | Username & Password guidance | See the AUAS ID & Password section here. |
You will be issued with an AUAS smartcard to allow building access and printing. It can also be used to make purchases within the catering facilities once ‘loaded’ with credit. Catering at AUAS is cashless and only Smartcard or debit/credit card payments are possible.
For AUAS information, see the Paying at the AUAS section on the AUAS Practical Matters website.
Eduroam
Eduroam in the Leeuwenburg building has good connection, speed and security. Access to the Eduroam network is via your Northumbria Student login:
| Northumbria Students |
|
| Northumbria Staff |
|
For a guide on connecting to Eduroam click here.
HVA Open Wi-Fi
This WiFi connection is provided by AUAS. There is no authentication required to access, however the speed on this is slower and does not have encryption.
We recommend you stick to Eduroam where possible.
You will need to provide a laptop to use during your studies at Amsterdam campus. We recommend the following specification for devices:
| Windows | Mac | |
|
| |
TIP: Student discounts are available through certain Dutch re-sellers using your AUAS login details. For example: https://store.hp.com/NetherlandsStore/Merch/Default.aspx and www.surfspot.nl
Once you have your laptop you will need to:
- Charge it up - There's limited power sockets in lecture theatres, so you must charge your laptop back in your room or in the Leeuwenburg building common areas.
- Connect to WiFi - Get online using the Eduroam WiFi network.
- Activate AntiVirus software - Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender to protect your laptop.
- Install key software - Your tutor will advise which software you should download and you can visit www.northumbria.ac.uk/downloads
- Bookmark this page - Keep key IT information at your fingertips by bookmarking www.northumbria.ac.uk/it/amsterdam
You have an Office 365 account as part of your benefits of being a Northumbria Student. Instructions for accessing and installing Office applications can be found here: Microsoft Office for personal use - Students
Your lecturer/tutor will advise on the key software you’ll need for your course, and a lot of it is available, free of charge, from the Northumbria Downloads page: www.northumbria.ac.uk/downloads
Business Analytics software
For MSc Business with Business Analytics students, we're providing 3 additional pieces of software: SAS, VISA, and SIMUL8. All are available through the Simply Web Student Desktop. For help using Simply Web, click here
Anti-Virus
Windows 10 machines have their own Anti-Virus protection, “Windows Defender”, which comes ready for you to activate. Please see the Microsoft Defender guidance page for help doing this and to learn more about staying secure online.
You have two options for data storage:
- An Office365 OneDrive account, which is accessible anywhere via a web browser. We recommend you use this for your work due to its accessibility wherever you are and on whatever device you’re using.
- A Northumbria U drive, which is accessible through Simply Web only.
More about Simply Web
Simply Web offers web access to Northumbria IT facilities from a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops. It has a secure connection, preventing your password and other data from being seen across the network. For more information, click here.
To print, you can either use multifunction printers in the library, paid using your AUAS smartcard, or the Canon print shop within Leeuwenburg building.
For AUAS information, see the Printing, Copying & Scanning section on the AUAS Practical Matters website.
You will use Blackboard for all of your modules and course materials, to access reading lists, and to collaborate with your classmates and tutors. When you first login to Blackboard you will be taken to the Activity Stream page, which helps you keep track of what’s happening on your course.
To access Blackboard and find out more, go to northumbria.ac.uk/blackboard
