Case Study - Filtronic
Exploring Opportunities in the Space Sector: A Q&A with Fin Farrelly, Head of Marketing at Filtronic
Filtronic’s journey demonstrates how a company with deep expertise in terrestrial communications can successfully transition into the rapidly growing space economy. For innovative businesses across advanced engineering, digital infrastructure, manufacturing, and data, there has never been a better time to explore this sector.
Could you tell us a bit about Filtronic and what the company does?
We design and manufacture advanced radio frequency (RF) and millimetre wave (mmWave) products. In essence, our technology enables the transmission and receipt of large volumes of data across the RF spectrum, supporting everything from telecommunications and the internet to satellite communications.
Founded in 1977 as a spin-out from Leeds University, Filtronic has grown from its roots in defence and telecoms to become a key player in critical communications for aerospace, defence, and increasingly, space. We operate from four UK sites – Sedgefield, Cambridge, Manchester, and Leeds – with additional presence in the US.
What makes Filtronic stand out in the market?
We specialise in solving complex RF challenges at the highest frequencies, which is precisely where communication becomes technically demanding. Global technology leaders turn to us because we can deliver what few others can. For example, we powered Google’s high-altitude 'pseudo-satellite' project, providing the RF links that transmitted data between balloons and the ground. This innovation created new possibilities for broadband delivery without expensive terrestrial infrastructure.
How did Filtronic make the move into the space sector?
The transition was a natural evolution. Our expertise in high-frequency, high-capacity terrestrial communications translated directly to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and High-Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) applications. Around four years ago, we began collaborating more closely with space companies to address connectivity challenges in LEO, supporting their goal of bridging the global digital divide.
Can you share an example of your work in the space sector?
Our collaboration with SpaceX is a great example. Despite their vertically integrated model, SpaceX selected Filtronic to provide critical E-Band RF technology for the Starlink satellite constellation. In August 2025, we secured our largest-ever contract, worth £47.3 million, to supply next-generation Gallium Nitride (GaN) Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs). These amplifiers deliver higher output power, improved efficiency, and enhanced thermal performance, all vital for reliable LEO communications.
What opportunities does the space sector present for UK businesses?
Space is no longer the domain of governments and large aerospace primes. The rise of commercial space, particularly small satellites and LEO constellations, has created opportunities for agile, specialist firms to supply high-value components, systems, and services. From advanced manufacturing to data analytics and communications, there’s room for innovation and growth across the supply chain.
How is Filtronic positioned to support this growth?
We leverage deep expertise in RF, microwave, and mmWave technologies to design and manufacture mission-critical components for both payloads and ground stations. Our products include:
• mmWave transceivers, filters, and power amplifiers for high-bandwidth inter-satellite links.
• E-band ground station uplinks and downlinks for rapid Earth-to-orbit data transfer.
• Advanced RF filters that maintain signal integrity in harsh space environments.
We are trusted by leading space and defence organisations to deliver scalable, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
What does the future look like for Filtronic and the wider space industry?
The space sector is at a tipping point. Expanding satellite constellations and growing launch capacity are driving massive demand for high-performance communications technology. For Filtronic, our recent SpaceX contract forms part of a multi-year strategy to place GaN E-Band SSPA technology at the centre of next-generation satellite communications. We see major opportunities across the ecosystem as space becomes integral to global connectivity.
Why should businesses consider exploring the space sector now?
The commercial space industry is scaling rapidly, fuelled by falling launch costs, growing global demand for connectivity, and strong government support. UK businesses have a unique opportunity to establish themselves as key suppliers and innovators. Those who move early will help shape the next era of global communications. Space is no longer science fiction; it’s a thriving commercial reality with vast potential.
Takeaway for businesses:
Space offers significant opportunities for businesses with transferable technologies and innovative thinking. Those who engage now will be well placed to thrive as the sector continues to expand.
