What will I learn on this module?

The module aims to provide you with an overview of the international hospitality industry and its management and strategic and operational practices which accompany it. The module provides knowledge of both historical and current factors which have shaped the industry and provides you with the skills to evaluate changes taking place in key markets and be able to consider the implications of these for hospitality providers.

You will learn about the following topics:
• The hotel sector – diversity, product appraisal
• An evaluation of global hospitality demand and the industry’s response to changes in consumer demand
• Hospitality marketing and brand management
• Hospitality operations, theory and practice in departments and functions
• International hospitality growth strategies
• Hospitality customer service management, loyalty and quality.
• The experience economy, servicescape and co-construction of experience, experiencescape and eventscape
• International hospitality human resource management
• Sustainability

How will I learn on this module?

Your learning journey on this module will consist of a combination of tutor led, learner lead and team lead activities. You will have lectures which focus on specific topics and introduce you to the theoretical application behind the management of the topic. The lectures will provide contemporary industry examples which will enable you to critically evaluate operational and strategic practice. You will also have a weekly seminar; this will re-enforce the lecture content and be of a practical, problem solving nature, often working in groups. You will often work with case studies and online gaming platforms to critically examine the management and operational aspects of hospitality organisations. The module is fast paced and on account of the scale and diversity of the industry, new topics areas are introduced at most lectures. You will learn by undertaking independent study and directed learning on the topics; resources for this will be indicated, and these will support your learning experience.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Support will be provided by an academic member of staff who will facilitate your learning and support you through the tutor and learner lead sessions. You will be signposted towards appropriate activities that you should be engaging in during your independent study time. Tutors are also available upon request to support you outside formal session time by responding to questions or concerns you may have via email or appointment. Seminar activities are organised in small groups which enables you to have a closer and more personalised academic support.

Academic support is also provided through the provision of a range of University learning support services. A wide range of online support materials are also available thought the virtual learning environment. These materials include recordings, webcasts, pre-recorded sessions on the use of specialist software and key academic skills, also an electronic reading list including RSS feeds that showcase the application of various practices presented in the module. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of this module students will be expected to complete a wide range of guided reading so as to be able to engage in the seminar activities.

To support you in your academic progress, you will receive both formative and summative feedback/feed-forward on your work through the course of each academic year. Regular formative feedback on class activities provides you with the necessary guidance to scaffold your knowledge and understanding of key issues to enable your success in the final summative assessment. Summative feedback/feed-forward will be provided on your work after it has been assessed and graded. You should use all feedback that you receive to identify areas of strength and areas for future study and improvement.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
• Develop a critical understanding of management in the international hospitality industry. You will learn how to address problems and challenges in a management capacity. (MLO1)

• Critically assess operational and strategic practice in the industry in order to achieve appropriate management solutions. (MLO2)

• Critically engage in research and develop an academic essay of a high standard. (MLO3)

How will I be assessed?

The summative assessment comprises of two components:
40% incorporating:
• 20% team activity. MLO1, MLO2
• 20% individual assignment MLO1, MLO2

60% 2000 word assignment. MLO3

Module abstract

This hospitality module is a fast-paced area of study which examines the key management practices in this vibrant global sector, enabling you to fully appreciate the diversity and complexity of provision. You will engage in critical debate and analysis of the concepts and frameworks that affect business and operational strategy.
You will gain essential knowledge for developing a career in the sector by examining contemporary issues within the International hospitality sector and utilise theory and insights from a wide range of academic perspectives. International examples illustrate industry practice and demonstrate the diversity across different global locations and cultures.
