Successful coaches have to be driven and are constantly looking to improve. You'll have a network around you that will support you at every step of your journey to becoming a high-performing coach.
As part of your ongoing development, you'll learn how to analyse your methods and continuously improve your approaches to coaching through learning opportunities such as laboratory work, coaching practicals and workshops.
You’ll also learn from your fellow students. Almost all professional coaches work as part of a coaching team, and you’ll spend a lot of your course working alongside your peers and tutors, giving each other advice and discussing your methods, philosophy and challenges.
This course incorporates various assessment methods, including: examinations, portfolios, essays and assignments, article critiques, workbooks, coaching reports, logbooks, case studies, oral presentations, project reports, coaching practical assessments, learning contracts, literature reviews, posters, and group assessments.
Your academic tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, problem-based workshops, case discussions, practical activities, group work and tutorials. To facilitate the essential learning that needs to take place outside of formal contact sessions, there will be directed learning tasks during every module.
Our staff will give you an insider’s perspective on coaching. You'll be supported by experienced academics and industry experts, several of whom are renowned for their work in coaching across the world; this experience means that you’re never just getting theory. Our staff have tested what they teach you at the highest possible level.
Did you know: The Rugby Football Union, Sport England, British Gymnastics, the Youth Sport Trust, the English Federation for Disability Sport, British Tennis, British Equestrian Federation, British Rowing, Football League Education, FIFA, UEFA and PGMOL have all benefited from the expertise of Northumbria staff.
Predominantly housed in Sport Central, our facilities include an indoor 40-metre sprint track, a range of state-of-the-art sport science laboratories and an environmental chamber that allows students and researchers to manipulate environmental conditions to mimic anywhere in the world. These facilities are complemented by multi-functional learning spaces and afford our students hands-on experience to enhance their development as researchers and practitioners.
The Libraries offer learning spaces to meet various needs, from silent or quiet study to social and collaborative learning. You'll be able to find the right learning space for you, whether you want to focus, free from distraction or work as part of a group. You'll also have access to an extensive collection of scholarly resources, including books, ebooks, print and e-journals, databases, collections of early historical books and primary digital archives.
Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists to guide your preparation for seminars and independent research.

Student fee loans have risen in line with the level of uplift decided by the UK Government.
