IR5006 - Politics Work Experience

What will I learn on this module?

In this module I will learn about the practice of politics. This module complements my learning of political concepts and academic theory by introducing me to the real world of politics. The module provides me with the opportunity to utilise my academic knowledge and develop my understanding by reflecting on how politics operates in the working environment. I will be required to reflect on the connections between academic theory and my experience of practice. It also provides me with the opportunity to develop my research skills which will be applied to a real piece of research. The module will also introduce me to possible careers in politics and enable me to have a more practical understanding of how politics works and, also, the skills required for a career in this area.

How will I learn on this module?

This module is based on a self-managed work experience with an agency or organisation related to the field of politics. As a student I will spend approximately 70 hours, usually one day a week, during semester two with a chosen employer. In addition to drawing on my academic knowledge I will also have the opportunity to practice and develop my research skills through either a small, individual research project or as part of a wider piece of ongoing research for the organisation. To help me prepare I am required to attend preparatory workshops which will be provided in semester one, including an introduction meeting and/or a taster session with the work experience organisation. I will also be expected to undertake background reading as directed which is necessary to have an understanding of the organisation before the practice element begins.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

As a student I need to continually reflect on my previous academic learning to the experience I have on placement. I will also draw on the guidance provided how to design and carry out research. The placement facilitates my academic development by providing the opportunity to see how politics works in practice and reflecting on my own development is key to the module. I will have the opportunity to develop my research skills and knowledge throughout this learning experience. The module tutor will provide support through group and individual tutorials and there will be a key contact at the work placemen to facilitate my learning. However given the nature of this module it will be necessary for me to take responsibility for my learning and be proactive in accessing the support available.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.
