Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?

Having visited Northumbria University at an undergraduate open day, I soon realised this was where I should study Psychology. Not only does the university have great research facilities such as the ecologically valid sleep lab, the course content appealed to me as it covered a range of topics, not to mention the staff were all really friendly and engaging too. After graduation, I knew I wanted to continue to study at Northumbria and complete a Masters degree in Health Psychology.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

Newcastle is such a lively city, with Northumbria University really central to everything; there’s so much to do. One of my favourite things to do (apart from shopping) is meeting up with course/work friends for a drink; there are so many different pubs and bars to explore.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

I already knew pretty much knew what to expect from Newcastle as a city, but what did impress me was how friendly and welcoming the city is to students.

Did you find Northumbria University welcoming?  Was it easy to fit in?

Northumbria University was incredibly welcoming, everybody was made to feel welcome and at ease, it took no time for people to fit in and establish friendships.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?

Exploring a new city, and meeting new people, it’s a cliché but I really have made some friends for life.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

My undergraduate dissertation supervisors Linda Little and Liz Sillence were both amazing in supporting me through conducting and writing my dissertation – they were so supportive and helpful. But my friends have been awesome support, and still are now since were all postgrads.

Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?

Head of Psychology Dr. Mark Moss and Professor Jason Ellis. They both have a catalogue of published work and I have experienced lectures from them both. Their work is innovative and interesting to read, I hope I can be as successful one day.

What is your favourite place on campus?

Probably either the Students Union or the Northumberland Café, both are good for relaxing between lectures with friends or having a study break.

What is the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course is that the lectures are esteemed in their respective fields of research. Also, the fact that guest lecturers often come in where their expertise exceeds that of the lecturer, Northumbria University ensures students receive the best possible levels of education.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Fail to prepare then prepare to fail! If you put the effort in, you will definitely see the benefits.

What do you want to do in the future?  What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I am currently mid-way through my MSc, and researching possible PhD ideas. Without a doubt I have learned how to write academically and conduct ethically sound research, which has improved throughout my time here. I have also become much more confidant presenting my work, and myself especially in presentations. In the future I would like to obtain a PhD, or possibly complete Stage 2 training to become a Chartered Health Psychologist, with the aim to work in public health.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement?  What were your most memorable experiences?

I volunteered as a research assistant in the Brain Performance and Nutrition Research Centre (BPNRC) one summer which was a great experience. I was trained to complete participant case report forms and how to train the participants using the cognitive test battery software.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Come to an open day and see what its all about, your course and Newcastle itself, I’m sure you wont be disappointed.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I have definitely become much more confident as a person, probably due to mixing with so many different people – lecturers and students.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Exciting, fun, happy.

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
