Flavia Burger Acevedo

Geography PhD

Phd Geography Student Flavia Burger AcevedoWhy did you choose Northumbria University?

Because I started researching with my current PhD supervisor some time ago in Chile. His research investigates Chilean glaciers - a specific topic that I wanted to learn, so I decided to apply to Northumbria to work with him.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

Newcastle is a nice city beside the River Tyne. The city has good connections to gorgeous local places, such as Northumberland, Tynemouth, and the Lake District, and it's not too far to Scotland.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region?

It is a stereotype that English people are cold, it surprised me how friendly and helpful people are in Newcastle.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

My supervisor has helped me and my husband since we arrived in Newcastle. Further we have very good friends from Chile, who have introduced me to life in Newcastle and the UK.

What is your favourite place on campus?

Sport Central! The University has fantastic infrastructure for people who enjoy sports and training.

What is the best thing about your course?

As I am involved in research, it is very important that at Northumbria there are many expert people than can help me, to learn new techniques to apply in my project.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

I have learnt to be organised and to prioritise the activities and analyses. When you are dealing with a lot of data and information, a good plan can save you from losing a lot of time.

What do you want to do in the future?

During the next year I will be learning and working on photogrammetric analyses and digital elevation models to reconstruct glacier changes.

Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
