Our Alumni - Work For Us
Where are you from?
Newcastle upon Tyne
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
As a part-time student working in industry, location was important, as it was impractical to move away. The range and availability of courses at Northumbria gave me the ideal opportunity to expand and improve upon my practical work experiences.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
I have lived in Newcastle all my life, and would find it very difficult to re-locate from the region. The city is able to cater for all tastes; no one has ever gotten bored in Newcastle! Personally, I am heavily into live music, and love seeing bands in some of our larger venues.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
I was slightly apprehensive taking up my degree 10 years later than traditional students; however the students, staff and employees at the University are all very welcoming.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
Everyone comes to university expecting to get a degree at the end, but for me it's been the extras. As a built environment student, I've won the opportunity to go to Barcelona and Las Vegas - all expenses paid - to see the very latest software developments in my field. These experiences are something that, I believe, money can't buy; the links and contacts I have made are proving invaluable!
Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?
I would have to say the staff and employees associated with the various CAD software modules. The ability to utilise the latest packages, and the 'bonuses' that come with that (as mentioned above) have led to several job offers, and the expansion in my career I set out to achieve when applying to university. I haven't even got my degree yet!
Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?
I'd say the other students on my course. When you see a perfectly planned presentation go off without a hitch, or a piece of coursework which has clearly had hours of care poured into it - you can't help but feel inspired.
What is your favourite place on campus?
Probably Habita - great ambience, reasonable prices, very local to the lecture and seminar rooms.
Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?
The Autodesk Student Expert's program is an international group of students who utilise software in the creation of construction, automotive, engineering and animation outputs. I'd have to say that the Las Vegas strip for 5 days will take some beating!
What is the best thing about your course?
The modules are delivered very succinctly, and all backed up on line using the Blackboard portal. This means that you don't spend your whole day writing endless notes verbatim whilst missing key points - you are able to take in a full understanding of the subject matter, interact with the sessions, and get the PDFs / slides later online.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
I think I've developed a better understanding of what it is to learn, and to enable myself to continually challenge thoughts and ideas, rather than taking text book answers as gospel. This has undoubtedly transferred into my work life too, and I believe has earned me greater respect amongst peers and directors.
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
It's difficult to say - right now I want to complete my degree, wear that daft looking hat on graduation day and savour the moment! Beyond that, I may consider a post grad qualification, although my main driver is to enjoy life, be comfortable, and not work too hard doing it!
Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?
I currently hold a Design Coordinator role with the UK's largest rooflight manufacturer. This has allowed me to take the lead in designing and coordinating all manner of glazed structural projects, ranging from domestic houses, to Heathrow Airport!
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
Go for it! University requires hard work, but it's so rewarding. As far as choosing Northumbria; the range of courses available is huge, the quality of teaching and material is great, and the city is outstanding.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
I feel more confident and assured in both my subject area, and in myself generally. The travelling experiences and opportunities to meet industry leaders have given me some great insights, contacts and skills, which I would not have gained had I not enrolled at Northumbria. These skills have elevated my security at work too.
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Fun, Engaging, Enlightening!
Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
Absolutely!
