Our Alumni - Work For Us
Where are you from?
Newcastle
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
After much thought, I believed Northumbria University provided me with the support to achieve my goals, whilst offering me the practical skills and knowledge which are essential in legal practice. I was also attracted by the opportunity to integrate the BPTC with my undergraduate law degree to train as a Barrister at an outstanding institution.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
I enjoy going to Tyneside Cinema as it has the charm of a classic cinema and offers a great selection of films from around the world in a relaxing environment. It's always worth paying a visit - especially when you need a break from studying!
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
I have always admired the view down by the Quayside. The area also boasts some of the best restaurants and bars in Newcastle.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
Despite that inevitable daunting feeling I got on my first few weeks trying to grips with all this new information, the lecturers and tutors where excellent in supporting and giving me the guidance I needed to get settled into university life. There were also a great ways of getting to know the people on my course through introductory workshop seminars.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
I enjoyed having the opportunity to make new friends who are equally as passionate about their chosen career paths and making some great connections along the way through various events.
Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?
All of the tutors at the law school have been incredibly supportive in helping me make my transition to studying at undergraduate level. They have helped me get the most out of my degree by providing tailored feedback in order for me to hone my approach to tackling subjects in my subsequent years of study.
Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?
Not only have my tutors influenced me, but other students on my course have always inspired me to work harder, reflect on my own performance which has enabled me seek new challenges and develop my existing qualities.
What is your favourite place on campus?
The library on the first floor of the law school always comes in useful!
Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?
During my studies I have received awards from North East based law firm for two consecutive years for my contributions as Course Representative. It was my duty to canvass the views of students on campus and exercise the student voice to serve students' needs and interests by regularly liaising with fellow students to reflect their thoughts in order to guide the direction of the programme. It was very rewarding experience!
What is the best thing about your course?
My course has allowed me to enjoy being in a intellectually stimulating environment where I have benefited from the collective experience of professional tutors who are or have been in legal practice. This has undoubtedly made my studies more enriching and meaningful in an atmosphere that is both friendly and vibrant.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
Time management! It is essential not only in your initial years of study, but throughout your course, to ensure you get the most out of the various societies, workshops and career events available at the University. Don't panic! No matter how much things may seem to be getting on top of you, the support of your guidance tutor, lecturers and peers will be paramount in helping your overcome obstacles that you may encounter in your studies or personal life.
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
I have ambitions to pursue either a career in legal practice or academia. I believe the practical aspects of the course has surpassed my initial expectations by helping me have a true appreciation of the tasks I would be expected to perform day to day in legal practice.
Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?
As well as securing legal work placements in law firms and barristers chambers, I was awarded a highly competitive internship from the law school where I supported an academic in producing a final manuscript for a book which will be marketed worldwide next year. This opportunity has provided me with a number of important transferable skills which will be instrumental for a successful career in legal practice or academia.
