Our Alumni - Work For Us
Where are you from?
Lake District, Cumbria
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
I chose Northumbria because I love the easy going city of Newcastle, where everything is close by, the modern campus and the affordably priced student union with a lively vibe. The course was the main factor and after attending my interview and seeing the friendly helpful staff I knew Northumbria is where I wanted to be.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
I love Newcastle and how easy everything is to get to. My favourite things are the range of places to eat, shop and go out to along with being a short metro ride away from the beach and having cheap diverse nights out from gigs to clubs.
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
I have been surprised and impressed by how friendly and helpful everyone is. For example if you want to find somewhere asking anyone on the street is no problem they always offer as much help as possible.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
Northumbria uni was very welcoming with your lecturers openly offering advice by the end of the first day I already had a good group of friends to spend the majority of my time with.
Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?
All the friends that I have made in my halls.
Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?
My professional tutor Sophie meller has inspired me most with her takes of teaching.
What is your favourite place on campus?
The student union is my favourite place on campus with affordable food and drink and a relaxing environment for you to socialise with your friends.
What is the best thing about your course?
Being actively involved with the children during placements.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
To look after my money and keep on top of my work.
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
I want to be a primary school teacher and through my course I have learnt the importance of planning and observing and the skills to do this effectively which will help me to become a successful teacher.
Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?
During my placement my most memorable experiences were the bonds I made with the children and sitting watching/comforting them as a thunderstorm went on outside.
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
The most important things to consider are 'will you be happy with where you are living?' As you will be spending 3/4 years here so you need to like the area as well as the university and obviously 'is the course right for you?' You need to make sure you're getting a good amount of contact hours and will enjoy the work you are par taking in.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
I feel I have become more responsible, mature and independent at Northumbria from looking after myself completely and taking charge of my work load to reach deadlines.
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Inspirational, enjoyable and educational
