What appealed to you about Northumbria University?
The University offers a large and well developed Sports Department with a solid staffing team. In the area the University has a good reputation and is near to home which appealed to me due to commitments at home.
What was it about the course that particularly appealed?
As the course combined development with coaching it seemed a good option, and beneficial in opening more career possibilities. The module titles were also appealing as they were new to what I had previously been able to study in sport.
How did you feel during your first week at Northumbria?
I was excited with the new experiences and meeting new people. As it was a totally new situation in comparison to school it felt more grown up, especially living away from home and being without help from family. Overall, the first week was a great entrance into student life and I felt really supported at this time.
What do you like most about the course?
I like the assignments, as they are interesting and beneficial in developing understanding.
How do you get on with your tutors?
The tutors are really friendly and over the two years already studying at the University I have developed good relationships with them. For instance I feel at ease asking for help with assignments, and on the other hand love a more informal chat about general life.
Do you have the opportunity for any work placements during your course?
Yes, I had a six week placement within a local Schools Academy. My role was a PE Teaching Assistant which allowed me to gain experience within a school, develop my teaching abilities and create new work relationships for further opportunities. Overall the placement enabled me to gain insight into a possible further career.
What do you do when you’re not studying?
My hobbies include horse riding, running and using the University gym facilities. The campus is great for meeting up with friends etc.
What’s your accommodation like?
My accommodation in the first year was really good - I loved living in the buildings and Newcastle as a city. I have made some great friends due to the accommodation. From living at home in second year you do save money, however I am living in Newcastle again for my third year as all the facilities and surroundings are worth it.
What would you like to do when you graduate?
I would like to do a GTP or PGCE in Secondary PE (at Northumbria preferably). Starting the course I had an idea of different careers however I have been able to learn more about these through the course.
Have you used Student Services during your course?
I have used Student Services for help with student finance issues.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying for your course?
If you are offered an Applicant Open Day at the University DEFINITELY go. The tutors and students around are an accurate representation of what the University will be like.
University is a great stepping stone from school to the big wide world of working. Not only does it develop employability skills through new experiences in life it provides a sound base of knowledge and skills for specific job routes.
