Katie came to Northumbria through clearing to study psychology, after having not received the grades required to secure a place on her original course.

Having researched many psychology courses, Katie was intrigued by what Northumbria had to offer. “I knew I wanted to study in Newcastle, which was solidified for me after speaking to someone on the Northumbria clearing hotline,” she said. “I had a great conversation, with someone who took me through my options including a foundation year to get me onto the course I was interested in.

“At school I was told that the course didn’t matter as long as I studied at a Russell Group university. But when I read about the psychology course at Northumbria, they were offering me something that I hadn’t seen anywhere else.

“Studying at Northumbria meant that I was able to get a greater overview of the subject whilst still being able to specialise in a certain pathway later down the line. The same subject at other universities were much more focused from the offset.”

Originally from the Lincoln countryside, Katie wanted a change of pace and chose Newcastle as she knew people who had studied in the city and was confident that she would feel at home here. “I’ve always felt safe at Northumbria. Security in my accommodation were really easy to get in touch with, which made the transition of moving away so much easier, because someone was always there.

“I feel like between the accommodation staff and the wider university, I have a great support system. When I had covid, my post was brought to me. When I’ve needed guidance, my personal tutor was there and Ask4Help is always available.”

Katie had previously played lacrosse at school and was delighted to find out there was a society for the sport at Northumbria. “Lacrosse has been an amazing way to meet people from all years and courses, and sometimes from other universities when playing at competitions. After games we all go out for food, which is a great way to bond with the team.

“If you’re nervous about making friends, I would definitely recommend joining a sports team. You don’t have to have any experience to play lacrosse, you will be coached from the beginning. Next year I’ll be a coach. I can’t wait to get started.”

Katie was asked what her advice would be to other students considering coming to Northumbria through clearing. She said: “I would suggest that before you do anything, take a step back and ask yourself if the course is right for you. I found my course on the Northumbria website and after calling the hotline and asking a few questions, I was able to make the decision which secured me a place on the course which was perfectly suited to me.
