Monday 6th July 2026 - Call for Current Topics Opens

A current topic is a one-off grouping for the purposes of a single conference which reflects a contemporary topic of debate or an issue of emerging importance, and which would be expected to attract at least six papers. Proposals should address the significance and currency of the topic and its appeal to the socio-legal community. Proposals should also be distinguished from regular streams. 

Please note that convenors of current topics are expected to be SLSA members, attend the conference in person, and cover their own registration fee, although they may apply for an SLSA bursary (where eligible) to cover this fee. The SLSA fee-waiver scheme for permanent stream convenors is not open to convenors of current topics.

Tuesday 16th February 2027 – Draft Programme Released

Tuesday 2nd March 2027 – Final Programme Released

Tuesday 9th March 2027 – Late Registration Closes

Tuesday 23rd – Thursday 25th March 2027 – Conference

The draft programme will be available from Tuesday 16th February 2027. The final programme will be available form Tuesday 2nd March 2027.

The plenary will take place in the first session on 24th March 2027. More details to follow.

Getting Here

Northumbria University has two separate campuses - Newcastle City Campus and Coach Lane Campus, both located within Newcastle upon Tyne. The conference will be held at City Campus East only, and the postcode is NE2 1XA.

Newcastle upon Tyne is a regional capital and is just under three hours away from London by the fastest rail service, whilst Edinburgh is only an hour away. Newcastle has its own International Airport, whilst regular ferry services operate to and from Northern Europe.

Road travel, by coach or car, is particularly easy as Newcastle stands on the premier north-south route in the UK. Once in Newcastle itself, the extensive local public transport system, including the Metro (Tyneside's own underground), makes getting around very easy.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided on the ground floor of the conference venue. Please note any dietary requirements when registering.

The Conference Drinks Reception will be held on Tuesday 23rd March 2027 at the Biscuit Factory, an independent art gallery and restaurant located on the edge of Ouseburn, Newcastle’s cultural quarter. The Biscuit Factory is a short walk away from the conference venue.

Gala Dinner

The conference gala dinner will be held on Wednesday 24 March at St. James' Park, home of the world-famous Newcastle United Football Club.

Northumbria University's £100 million, award-winning City Campus East 1 (CCE1) offers purpose-built and versatile spaces for conferences, talks, exhibitions and seminars.

The ground floor is the central hub for our conferencing venues. It’s home to x3 large tiered lecture theatres (200, 250 and 400 capacity); 5 syndicate/breakout rooms; lecture breakout and exhibition space and a bright and airy cafe and dining area.

CCE1 is conveniently located across the road from Manors Metro station and is a 7-minute walk to Newcastle city centre.
