Daniel is an Assistant Professor and Degree Apprenticeships Lead in the School of Architecture and Built Environment at Northumbria University. As an industry-facing architect-academic, he contributes to creative practice research, research-informed teaching and policy engagement.
Working at the intersections of academia and industry, his teaching, research and practice spans interests in the design of children’s spaces, collaborative practice with creative and cultural sector organisations and architecture education including promoting alternative routes into the profession. Daniel’s research and scholarship have been published in academic and pedagogic journals, industry magazines, and edited volumes. He has presented papers at conferences, delivered invited talks and featured on podcasts.
Daniel’s current research, in collaboration with Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children’s Books and initially funded by the UKRI AHRC, explores children and young peoples interactions at multiple scales; from the book, to the archive and the city, and develops sets of ideas for increasing access to their collections. This work has resulted in exhibitions, artefacts and portfolios.
Daniel leads the first year of the Architect (Level 7) Degree Apprenticeship, as well as supervising design thesis projects across second (DA7014) and third (DA7016) years, and coordinates the End Point Assessment (DA7017). Apprentices tutored by Daniel have received regional and national recognition, including awards in themed, sponsored, and sector-specific categories. He is also co-author of the Architecture Apprenticeship Handbook (RIBA Publishing, 2024), intended to demystify this route into the profession for learners and practices, and help them to succeed.
He also coordinates the third-year Professional Practice stream of the BA (Hons) Architecture (KA6012) and BA (Hons) Interior Architecture (KA6036) degrees, working with an extensive professional network of architecture and built environment professionals to enrich academic curriculum and ensure preparedness for entry into professional practice.
Within the School of Architecture and Built Environment, Daniel serves as Degree Apprenticeships Lead, with responsibility for the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of its degree apprenticeship portfolio, spanning Architect (Level 6), Chartered Surveyor (Building, Quantity, and Real Estate, Level 6), and Construction Quantity Surveyor (Level 6). This includes compliance and quality assurance, end point assessment (EPA) oversight, employer and stakeholder engagement, curriculum and delivery oversight, learner experience and support, and collaboration and reporting.
At university level, Daniel serves as an internal panel member to University Approvals Panels (UAP) and is a trained mentor and reviewer for Higher Education Academy (HEA) claims at Associate (AFHEA), Fellow (FHEA) and Senior Fellow (SFHEA) descriptors as part of Northumbria University's Professional Recognition Scheme (NUPRS).
Daniel is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), member of the RIBA Validation Panel and RIBA New Courses Group, and has more recently chaired visiting boards to UK and international schools of architecture. He has acted as an external examiner to the undergraduate degrees in architecture at London South Bank University (LSBU) and the University of Bath, and postgraduate degree in architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow School of Art (GSA). He has also acted as an Independent Assessor to the Architectural Assistant (Level 6) Degree Apprenticeship at LSBU and industry specialist to GSA in support of curriculum reforms.
Daniel is a Registered Architect with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and a Chartered Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
