Neill Thompson is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational and Organisational Psychology at Northumbria University and Programme Leader for the MSc Occupational and Organisational Psychology. He is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. As a practitioner psychologist his work focuses on evidence based selection strategies and the delivery of human factors training (non-technical skills focused) to healthcare teams. He is also a member of the Vitalwork Psychology consultancy team.
Neill’s workplace bullying research has explored the prevalence and experiences of bullying and examined the use of interventions in the NHS. His research currently concentrates on three areas; i) the development , implementation and evaluation of interventions, ii) the use of discursive approaches and naturalistic data collection methodologies, iii) the role of the bystander. Neill is a Board Member of the International Association of Workplace Bullying and Harassment (IAWBH) and a member of DRAWING - a UK based practitioner-research collaboration focused on developing bullying interventions.
More broadly Neill’s research interest include a focus on organisational and institutional behaviour in areas such as the use of humour, the experience and social construction of stress, and what happens during specific organisational practices like job interviews or team meetings.
Neill completed his undergraduate degree in Social Psychology at Loughborough University, MA Human Resource Management at Northumbria University and MSc Occupational Psychology at Birkbeck College, University of London. Previously he has worked as an in-house organisational psychologist and in human resource management.
