Dr Eline van Asperen

Research Fellow

School: Geography and Natural Sciences

I started my academic life at Leiden University, The Netherlands, where I graduated with an MA in Archaeological Sciences. I moved to the UK to do a PhD on the biostratigraphy and palaeoecology of ice age horses at the University of York (2006-2010). I held two postdoctoral fellowships (Marie-Curie ERG, 2010-2013; Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, 2013-2016) at Liverpool John Moores University, then spent 9 years as a technician in Archaeology at Newcastle University (2017-2026).

Eline van Asperen

I am a palaeoecologist and archaeological scientist who specialises in palynology, with wider interests in Quaternary mammals. I examine the relationships between environmental factors and the dynamics of human and animal populations, using a multi-proxy approach including pollen, NPPs, zooarchaeological material, XRF and ICP-MS.

At Northumbria University, I am a postdoc for the the Leverhulme-funded project 'Community, Landscape and Social Stratification in early Medieval Northumbria'. This project aims to use environmental archives that reflect the activities of the everyday to investigate economic and social transformations in the post-Roman world.
