Our Alumni - Work For Us
Where are you from?
Newcastle upon Tyne
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
It was the only local university which offered part-time study while being able to continue working full-time. This was very important to me because I am a mature student so I need to be able to pay my bills; and my employer is not funding my university degree - I am.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
I LOVE Newcastle! I love the culture and the people, everyone is so friendly.
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
There are always new places to discover that I haven't heard about; new exhibitions, new restaurants and bars. It has a fantastic night life.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
Very much, all the staff are really helpful, especially as it can be a little scary going back into education when you have not been studying for a while. I have found the staff really supportive and they encourage you to improve at your own pace without making you feel pressured.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
Confidence building!
Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?
The teaching staff on my programme and the support staff have been really helpful.
Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?
One of my lecturers, Claire Hoy, who has a very impressive way of teaching. We have to do presentations on our course to improve our presentation style and prepare us for employability; I am always amazed at how she manages to engage her audience and hold us captivated.
What is your favourite place on campus?
I like the walk from the library and sports central over the bridge to the Business & Law School; the little bridge is my favourite place because I always walk over it on the way to University and I get excited at what I might learn. I like looking down at the traffic as well, everything looks so busy and fast paced.
Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?
I am trying to complete my Passport to Employability qualification because although I am already employed I think it will enhance my CV. I have also enquired about joining the Nightline team and I am waiting to hear back about it.
What is the best thing about your course?
The assignments and being able to improve on each one. The tutors are great for providing excellent feedback, and really helpful if you have not done as well as you have expected; they always explain how you can improve in simple, achievable steps.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
To allow enough time for assignments! I tend to procrastinate so I have learnt to do my reading first and to set mini deadlines to ensure I can allow myself enough time to complete my assignments.
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
I would like to apply to a graduate scheme / fast-track to management; I am also considering applying for a postgraduate qualification but I need to finish my degree first!
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
If you're ever thinking of withdrawing or that you can't do your work - speak to someone and don't give up! There are always people able to help. I have found that the library has some really great workshops on how to master certain things, the support staff can help too!
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
I think I have learnt to multi-task and prioritise a lot better because I have to juggle deadlines at work with deadlines at university, as well as manage a household and spend time with my family and friends. It can be tough but it's good preparation for a management career! It has also built my confidence.
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Productive / Fun / Challenging!
Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
Yes!
