Where are you from?
London
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
Because it was one of the country's leading courses which specialise on the applied and social elements of drama and the performing arts. I also had heard a lot of good things about the University and the city of Newcastle so decided to go to an Open Day.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
I think it's amazing; it's a lovely city with a rich and cultural background - it doesn't hurt that it has an incredible nightlife as well! I love going to gigs at The Cluny, it's really cheap and a really good alternative night to a club. There are also a number of good vintage fairs and shows around the city.
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
The people - they're all so friendly! The city is also a lot more beautiful than I anticipated.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
Yes - very! The events during freshers week introduced me to a lot of people straight away and I felt like I fitted in with everyone on my course immediately and a lot of friendships were made!
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
I would say the social and independent aspects. It's really great (although daunting to start with!) meeting new people of your own accord and having full independence.
Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?
The lecturers I have; they speak to you as an equal not as a student and the lectures and seminars are engaging and fun. It was also inspiring talking to second and third year current students when I first started.
Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?
I am part of the Drama Society currently and so far it's proven to be a huge amount of fun! The highlight for me was definitely putting on 'Alice' - a modern day take on 'Alice in Wonderland'. And at the beginning of the third semester I'm planning on getting back into sports and possibly playing football.
What is the best thing about your course?
How engaging it is; the tutors provide a lot of help and support when needed but allow us students proper freedom to explore the subject areas as academics.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
To research and plan your work properly!
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
I would preferably like to go into acting, but failing that possibly marketing or music production. The skills I have learnt whilst being at university which will aid this are things such as learning being dependable and responsibility independent of parents. I feel like I have matured a lot!
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
Do it! Make sure to attend at least an Open Day/Applicant Day and when you actually get here make sure to go to all the social events and freshers fairs - it's a great way to meet new people and engage in a variety of social activities.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
I feel like I've matured exponentially since coming to Northumbria! I feel far more confident and sociable, it's amazing being surrounded by so many other students in the same position as you!
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Fun, Social, Inspiring
Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
Definitely!
