Elise Taylor

Clearing Case Study

After changing her mind about where she wanted to go to University, Elise rang the Clearing hotline and chose to study Psychology at Northumbria.

On results day, Elise had been accepted at her first-choice institution, but reconsidered this offer when she realised she wanted to stay closer to home. Elise knew the city well and had heard a lot about the course from friends who had attended an open day at the University and were ‘raving’ about how much they enjoyed it.

Although Elise knew that Clearing was an option, she wasn’t very familiar with the process. “I called the Clearing hotline and they guided me through the whole thing,” she said. “Members of staff kept in contact with me over email, so I always felt like I was in the loop with how my application was progressing and I was confident that if I had questions, someone would be around to answer them”.

Elise was unable to attend an open day, but having heard great reviews from her friends, she was confident that she wanted to study Psychology and that she wanted to do it at Northumbria.

Commenting on what she enjoys most about her course, she said: “My modules are super interesting and the staff are very helpful. There are a lot of people on my course and they’re still available for anyone who needs support or has questions.

“I’ve also had careers support. I’m in my final year now and have been thinking about what I want to do after graduating. So, I met with the careers team who suggested I looked at a graduate scheme. They also pointed me in the right direction to find volunteering opportunities which would help me get more experience in the Forensics field before I started my Masters.”

Elise prides herself in being an active member of the Northumbria community, getting involved in a range of activities and society’s at the Students’ Union. “I am currently part of the Psychology Society, and have previously taken the role as its secretary,” she said.

“It has been a great way to meet new people and make friends, which is one of the reasons why I have always encouraged people to join! Welcoming more and more students into the society and watching friendships grow because of it, is something that I’m really proud to have been a part of.

“I’ve loved my University experience and I am so happy that I made the last minute decision to study at Northumbria. My advice to anyone about to go through the Clearing process would be to not panic. It was actually really simple, made easier as everyone I spoke to went above and beyond to help me out.”

Northumbria University has a limited number of places available for high quality students through Clearing this Summer. For more information, visit Northumbria University’s Clearing Hub or call the Clearing Hotline on 0800 085 1085.
