Luis made the decision to apply to Northumbria through the Clearing process after missing the original UCAS deadline.
Having taken a break from studying, Luis was ready to return to Higher Education to pursue a degree in History. After searching for the best way to apply, Luis found Northumbria’s online Clearing form and submitted it there and then.
“It really was as simple as completing an online form and before I knew it, I was being contacted with an offer to study at the University,” Luis said. “I didn’t have the points needed to join the History course straight away but was pleased to hear that a Foundation year was available.
“My favourite module by far was The History of the North East. I wasn’t expecting to study such a variety of topics during that year, but I learnt so many interesting things. I’d say it’s really set me up for the rest of my degree.
Outside of his academic studies, Luis is part of the History society at the Students’ Union. He said: “Obviously I love the subject, as I’ve chosen to study it for my degree. But the great thing about the society is meeting people with the same passion, from all different courses at the University. I’ve even met Northumbria Alumni through the society, who have shared their experiences and have often given us advice on student life.
Luis has also received support from the University to help him throughout his degree. “When I started struggling with my mental health, I approached my lecturers who pointed me in the right direction to get the help I needed. They made sure arrangements were in place for my exams and that I was in contact with the Counselling and Mental Health Support team.
“Someone from the team rang me to discuss what was going on and set me up with weekly 1-1 meetings with a counsellor. They were so helpful in getting my mental health back on track.”
When chatting with Luis, we asked him where his favourite place to study on campus was. He answered without hesitation: “Student Central is my go-to study spot. There’s a tonne of study areas and desks to work collaboratively or quietly, so it’s a great place to go and read or work. It’s also a good place to chill in between classes.
“Studying at a city centre campus also has its perks. You can get from lecture theatre to Northumberland Street in 5 mins - which is perfect when you need to nip into town or are going out for some food after uni.”
Luis was surprised by how easy the Clearing process was and offered some words of advice to future students. “The whole thing went by really quickly,” he said. “I didn’t know much about the process, but the application form was super simple and I got support from lecturers on the History course throughout.”
